The Sword of the Spirit is
the sixth and final piece of
the Armor of God listed in Ephesians 6:17.
It is the only offensive weapon in the armor
and represents the Word of God.
While the other pieces are primarily defensive,
the Sword of the Spirit enables the believer to
take the offensive against the enemy
through the power of Scripture.
The Roman soldier carried a short sword called a gladius. It was designed for close-quarters combat and was highly effective for both thrusting and slashing. Unlike long swords used for swinging from a distance, the gladius required the soldier to get close to his enemy. It was a weapon of precision, power, and effectiveness in hand-to-hand fighting.
Paul uses this image to show that the Word of God is our primary offensive weapon in spiritual warfare.
The Sword of the Spirit is identified as the Word of God. This refers to Scripture empowered by the Holy Spirit. It is not merely the Bible as ink on paper, but the living, active Word of God applied by the Spirit in the life of the believer.
Hebrews 4:12 describes it this way:
