Wisdom Literature is the Bible’s school of the skill of living under the fear of the Lord.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.
Job, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Songs
stand at the center of this collection.
Some psalms sit with them.
James sounds like their New Testament cousin.
These books do not replace Moses and the Prophets.
They teach you how to walk the path those books mark.
Israel already had Torah, priests, and prophets. Wisdom Literature answers a different question: How does a son, a king, a sufferer, a lover, or an old man live when the sky is quiet and the day is long?
- Proverbs deals in the grain of the world God made—diligence, speech, marriage, laziness, the trap of surety. Its maxims are true as patterns, not as vending machines.
- Job takes a blameless man into ash and refuses the friends’ easy math.
- Ecclesiastes walks the same earth and says vapor, vapor—under the sun—then ends where Proverbs began: fear God and keep His commandments.
- The Song sings covenant desire without blushing, a fire the wise will not treat as a toy.
- Certain psalms teach the two ways, the brief flourishing of the wicked, the clean fear of the Lord.
- In the New Testament, Christ is the wisdom of God. In Him are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
- James tells you to ask for wisdom, to be doers, to bridle the tongue.
Wisdom Literature is not a fifth gospel. It is how the fear of the Lord sounds in workshops, bedrooms, palaces, and graveyards. Hear it beside the Law, not instead of it.
- Beginning of wisdom is fear of the Lord, not a high score on cleverness.
- Proverbs is grain, not a contract that suffering never visits the diligent.
- Job exists so the friends cannot own the whole wisdom tradition.
- Under the sun is Ecclesiastes’ lab; fear God is his conclusion, not his mood.
- The Song belongs with wisdom because desire needs a holy skill.
- Christ does not cancel Solomon. He is greater than Solomon.
- James is wisdom with the accent of the synagogue and the cross.
- The Fear of the Lord – First lesson; last lesson.
- Proverbs – Skill for the path; words, work, women, wine, wealth.
- Job – Integrity under ash; whirlwind; Redeemer.
- Ecclesiastes – Vapor under the sun; remember your Creator.
- Song of Songs – Love strong as death; do not awaken love before it pleases.
- Wisdom Psalms – Two ways; brief grass of the wicked.
- Christ Our Wisdom – Greater than Solomon; treasures hidden in Him.
- Proverbs 1:7 – “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
- Proverbs 9:10 – “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.”
- Job 28:28 – “Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.”
- Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 – “The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment.”
- Ecclesiastes 1:2 – Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity.
- Song of Songs 8:6-7 – Love is strong as death… Many waters cannot quench love.
- Psalm 1:1-2 – Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked… his delight is in the law of the Lord.
- Psalm 73:16-17 – When I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task, until I went into the sanctuary of God.
- 1 Kings 4:29-34 – God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding beyond measure… He also spoke 3,000 proverbs.
- Matthew 12:42 – Something greater than Solomon is here.
- 1 Corinthians 1:24, 30 – Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God… Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God.
- Colossians 2:2-3 – All the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden in Christ.
- James 1:5 – If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach.
- James 3:13-17 – Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom… the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable.
- Proverbs 3:5-6 – Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. Fools despise wisdom and instruction.
The fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.
Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.
Something greater than Solomon is here. Christ became to us wisdom from God.
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God. The wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable.
Do not read Proverbs as if Job never sat in ashes. Do not read Ecclesiastes as if the Preacher never feared God. Sit in this school. Begin with the fear of the Lord. End there. The treasures are hidden in Christ. Ask. Walk. Do not despise instruction.
