Church Life is what the people of God do together under one Head
—
gather,
remember,
serve,
watch,
and wait.
They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship,
to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
Let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works,
not neglecting to meet together,
as is the habit of some.
Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her.
Life in that people is not a hobby bolted onto private faith.
It is the house He is building.
The church is the assembly of the called, the household of God, the body of Christ, a holy temple. Church life is that assembly actually living: Word read and preached, prayers, the loaf and the cup, baptism into the Name, gifts used for the common good, burdens carried, sins confessed, the unruly warned, the weak helped, the stranger welcomed, songs to one another, elders who watch for souls, deacons who keep the tables honest, a table that waits for the poor brother. It is not a campus brand. It is not a stream you watch in bed and call covenant. Some had already made a habit of neglecting to meet. Hebrews will not bless that habit. Devoted is Acts’ word—ongoing, stubborn, together. One another is the grammar. The devil divides. Church life is how a people refuse him a foothold without turning the house into a fortress against the nations. The gates of hell will not prevail. That promise sits on a rock and a confession, and it is lived in rooms with names and faces. Stay. Speak. Eat. Serve. Watch. The Head has not resigned.
- Devoted is four things together: teaching, fellowship, bread, prayers. Do not pick one and despise the rest.
- Not neglecting to meet is a command, not a preference for extroverts.
- Gifts are for the common good. Unused gifts starve the body.
- Discipline and welcome both belong or the house becomes a club or a barn.
- Elders watch. The whole body stirs. Life is not outsourced to a staff.
- Church life is local enough to wait for one another at the table.
- Christ gave Himself for her. Treat the gathering as purchased, not optional.
- The Word – Apostles’ teaching; preach; read; hold fast.
- The Gathering – Not neglecting; assembled; one place.
- The Table and the Water – Bread; cup; baptism; proclaim.
- One Another – Love; serve; forgive; bear; exhort.
- The Gifts – Varied grace; common good; each one.
- Watch and Care – Elders; discipline; widows; the weak.
- The Witness – All people will know; doors open; the Name.
- Acts 2:42, 46-47 – “And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.”… Day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes… And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.
- Hebrews 10:24-25 – Let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
- Ephesians 5:25-27 – Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her, that He might sanctify her… that He might present the church to Himself in splendor.
- 1 Timothy 3:15 – The household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and buttress of the truth.
- 1 Corinthians 12:4-7, 27 – To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good… Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.
- 1 Corinthians 11:26, 33 – As often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes… wait for one another.
- Matthew 18:15-17 – If your brother sins against you, go and tell him… If he refuses to listen even to the church…
- Matthew 28:19-20 – Make disciples… baptizing them… teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.
- 1 Peter 4:8-10 – Keep loving one another earnestly… Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another.
- Acts 6:2-4 – It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables… We will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.
- Hebrews 13:17 – Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls.
- Colossians 3:16 – Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs.
- Revelation 2:4-5 – You have abandoned the love you had at first. Remember… repent.
