Serving One Another is love with its sleeves rolled up inside the body of Christ.
Through love serve one another.
As each has received a gift,
use it to serve one another,
as good stewards of God’s varied grace.
If I then,
your Lord and Teacher,
have washed your feet,
you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve.
The house that heard the new commandment is supposed to look like a towel,
not a throne room.
Freedom in Christ is not a weekend off from people. Paul aims the liberty verse at the saints: do not use freedom as an opportunity for the flesh; through love serve one another. The whole law is fulfilled in one word—love your neighbor—and the neighbor in view here is sitting at the same table. Gifts are not trophies. They are steward-tools so that the varied grace of God reaches the next person. Martha served and grew anxious; service without sitting at His feet becomes a complaint. Tables in Acts needed servants so the word would not be neglected. The Twelve did not despise the tables. They refused to abandon prayer and the word to do them alone. Both kinds of serving stay in the church. Honor the unnoticed work. Outdo one another in showing honor. The Gentile lords exercise dominion. It shall not be so among you. Greatness is a slave’s place with a King’s heart. Feed My sheep is still serving one another after breakfast on the beach. The fever left her, and she began to serve them. Healing’s first fruit can be a dish. That is the shape.
- Through love is the motive. Without it, serving is a résumé.
- Gifts exist for the other, not for the platform.
- The towel is an example, not a sacrament you skip the rest of the week.
- Freedom that will not serve has misunderstood the cross.
- Word-ministry and table-ministry are both serving. Do not pit them.
- It shall not be so among you is how Jesus breaks the Gentile power reflex.
- She began to serve them is Mark’s quiet picture of a finished work.
- The Towel – Lord and Teacher on His knees; an example left.
- Through Love – Freedom aimed at the saints, not the flesh.
- The Gifts – Varied grace; stewards; each one.
- The Table – Wait; feed; seven chosen so the word can run.
- The Rank – Slave of all; ransom still the pattern.
- The House – Fever gone; hospitality; unnoticed work.
- The Sheep – Love Me; feed; tend.
- Galatians 5:13 – For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.
- 1 Peter 4:10 – As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.
- John 13:14-15 – “If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.”
- Matthew 20:26-28 – “Whoever would be great among you must be your servant… even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
- Mark 1:31 – The fever left her, and she began to serve them.
- Acts 6:2-4 – It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables… pick out seven men… we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.
- Romans 12:6-7, 10-11 – Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them… if service, in our serving… Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal… serve the Lord.
- Galatians 5:14 – For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
- 1 Corinthians 12:4-7 – There are varieties of gifts… To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
- John 21:17 – “Feed my sheep.”
- Philippians 2:3-7 – In humility count others more significant than yourselves… He emptied Himself, by taking the form of a servant.
- Hebrews 6:10 – God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for His name in serving the saints.
- Luke 22:27 – I am among you as the one who serves.
Through love serve one another.
As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.
If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.
The fever left her, and she began to serve them. Feed My sheep.
Do not use freedom to sit out the work. Pick up the towel. Use the gift on someone else’s need. Count them more significant. God does not overlook serving the saints. The King is still among you as the one who serves.
