Amen is the church’s yes to what God has already said.
All the promises of God find their Yes in Him. That is why it is through Him that we utter our Amen to God for His glory.
The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness.
Let it be so. It is firm. It is the people putting their name under His.
Amen comes from a Hebrew root that means firm, sure, faithful. When Israel heard the curses and the blessings read from Ebal and Gerizim, the tribes answered Amen. So be it. We own this word. The psalms close with it. The prayers of the synagogue kept it.
- Jesus used it in a way no rabbi quite matched: Amen, amen, I say to you—truly, truly—staking His own speech on the same word Israel used to bind herself to God’s. He does not merely receive Amen. He speaks it as the ground under the sentence.
- Paul says every promise is Yes in Christ, and through Him we say Amen to the glory of God. The Amen is not a magic closer. It is agreement.
- Revelation names Him the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God’s creation.
To say Amen in the assembly is to stand with that Witness. If you utter it and do not understand, Paul asks, how can you say the Amen? The word belongs in the mouth of people who have heard. Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving—Amen.
The last book ends with it.
Come, Lord Jesus.
The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all.
Amen.
- Amen means firm, not filler. It is a signature.
- Israel said it over curses and blessings. They were joining the oath.
- Jesus’ Amen, amen makes His word the sure thing, not a hope.
- Yes in Him is why the church can Amen the promises. The Yes came first.
- He is the Amen. The title in Revelation is a name, not a punctuation mark.
- Say it when you have heard. An Amen you do not understand is noise.

- Revelation 1:6-7 – To him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Behold, he is coming… Even so. Amen.
