Behold,
I lay in Sion a chief corner stone,
elect,
precious.
And he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.
Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
O my God,
I trust in thee:
let me not be ashamed.
To be put to shame is to have one’s trust fail in public. The hope is confounded. The refuge did not hold. It is stronger than embarrassment.
Isaiah promised a stone laid in Zion, a tried stone, a precious cornerstone. He that believes shall not make haste. He will not panic and run. The Greek Old Testament read that as he shall not be put to shame.
Peter and Paul follow that reading of Christ, the cornerstone. The one who believes in Him will not be undone on the day the trust is tested.
Those who trust idols, Egypt, or their own strength are put to shame. Those who wait on the Lord are not.
