I am the Lord thy God,
which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt,
out of the house of bondage.
Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help.
Out of Egypt have I called my son.
By faith he forsook Egypt,
not fearing the wrath of the king.
Egypt is the land of the Nile, the house of bondage, and the place God brought Israel out of. Joseph was sold there. Jacob’s house went down in the famine and became a nation there. Pharaoh would not let them go. The Lord sent the plagues, and Moses led them out through the Red Sea. The first commandment names that deliverance. Later, Judah was warned not to go down to Egypt for help against Assyria or Babylon. The horses and chariots would not save them. Matthew says the child Jesus was taken there, that the word might be fulfilled: Out of Egypt have I called my son. Egypt is a real land. It is also the picture of the bondage God breaks.
