Head of Gold is Daniel’s name for Nebuchadnezzar and the kingdom God gave him.
You, O king, the king of kings,
to whom the God of heaven has given the kingdom,
the power, and the might, and the glory…
you are the head of gold.
After you shall arise another kingdom inferior to you,
then another of bronze,
then a fourth strong as iron.
A stone cut not by human hands struck the image on its feet and became a mountain that filled the whole earth.
Gold is first. Gold is not last.
The king dreamed and forgot. The Chaldeans could not invent what they had not been shown. Daniel blessed the God who reveals mysteries. The statue is one body with four metals: gold, silver, bronze, iron mixed with clay. The head is Babylon under the man who had just taken Jerusalem. God names the gift before He names the decline. Kingdom, power, might, and glory were given, not seized in independence from heaven. Inferior follows. So do the later empires that still belong to the same image. The stone does not negotiate with the gold. It strikes the feet, and the whole statue—gold included—becomes like chaff on the summer threshing floor. The head of gold is therefore both honor and warning. Honor: the Most High handed a Gentile king the first place in the times of the nations. Warning: the finest metal still belongs to a body that will fall. Pride said, Is not this great Babylon, which I have built? The dream had already answered. You are gold because He said so. You are not the mountain.
- Given is the first verb. The head did not crown itself.
- Gold is the finest metal in the image and still only a part of a doomed statue.
- Inferior kingdoms follow by God’s schedule, not by Babylon’s consent.
- The stone strikes the feet, and the gold goes down with the clay.
- Head of gold is history with a name: Nebuchadnezzar’s Babylon.
- Mystery revealed is mercy to a king who would later eat grass.
- The mountain that fills the earth is the kingdom that shall never be destroyed.
- The Gift – Kingdom, power, might, and glory from the God of heaven.
- The Man – Nebuchadnezzar named as that head.
- The Image – One statue; four metals; one fall.
- Inferior After – Silver, bronze, iron and clay.
- The Stone – Cut without hands; strikes; becomes a mountain.
- Chaff – Gold carried away like the rest when the wind blows.
- Times of the Gentiles – A head, not the end of the story.
- Daniel 2:37-38 – “You, O king, the king of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given the kingdom, the power, and the might, and the glory, and into whose hand he has given, wherever they dwell, the children of man, the beasts of the field, and the birds of the heavens, making you rule over them all—you are the head of gold.”
- Daniel 2:31-35 – A great image, mighty and of exceeding brightness; head of fine gold; chest and arms of silver; middle and thighs of bronze; legs of iron; feet partly iron and partly clay. A stone cut out by no human hand struck the image on its feet. Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold all together were broken in pieces and became like the chaff of the summer threshing floors.
- Daniel 2:44-45 – “And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, nor shall the kingdom be left to another people. It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and it shall stand forever.”
- Daniel 2:20-22 – Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, to whom belong wisdom and might; He changes times and seasons; He removes kings and sets up kings; He reveals deep and hidden things.
- Daniel 4:30-32, 34-35 – Is not this great Babylon, which I have built? The Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom He will. His dominion is an everlasting dominion.
- Jeremiah 27:6 – I have given all these lands into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, My servant.
- Jeremiah 25:9, 11 – I will send for Nebuchadnezzar My servant; these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years.
- Isaiah 13:19 – Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the splendor and pomp of the Chaldeans, will be like Sodom and Gomorrah when God overthrew them.
- Habakkuk 1:6-7 – I am raising up the Chaldeans; their justice and dignity go forth from themselves.
- Revelation 18:2, 16-17 – Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great… Alas, alas, for the great city that was clothed in fine linen, in purple and scarlet, adorned with gold.
- Psalm 75:6-7 – Not from the east or from the west and not from the wilderness comes lifting up, but it is God who executes judgment, putting down one and lifting up another.
- Acts 17:26 – He determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place.
You are the head of gold. The God of heaven has given you the kingdom, the power, the might, and the glory.
After you shall arise another kingdom inferior to you.
A stone cut not by human hands struck the image on its feet. The gold became chaff with the rest.
The God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed.
He removes kings and sets up kings. The Most High rules the kingdom of men.
Is not this great Babylon, which I have built? Gold still answers to the Giver.
Do not mistake first metal for final kingdom. Honor the gift. Fear the Stone. The mountain will fill the earth.
