Synagogue is the gathered house where Moses is read and a seat waits for whoever will speak.
He went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day,
as was His custom.
After the reading of the Law and the Prophets,
the rulers of the synagogue sent a message to them,
saying, Brothers,
if you have any word of encouragement for the people, say it.
Jesus taught there,
healed there,
and was driven out of one.
Paul started there in city after city.
The synagogue is not the temple.
It is the local assembly of the Scriptures
—
and a fork in the road when Messiah is named.
After exile, Jews gathered where they were to hear the Book, pray, and live as a people without the daily altar of Jerusalem always in reach. Jesus grew up in that custom. Nazareth handed Him Isaiah and then tried to throw Him off a cliff. Capernaum heard a new authority and watched a withered hand stretch out. A ruler named Jairus fell at His feet. Rulers loved the best seats and long fringes; He warned them. Blessed are you when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your name as evil on account of the Son of Man—Luke knows the bans that would come. Paul, a Pharisee who had breathed murder toward the Way, still walked into synagogues first: Damascus, Pisidian Antioch, Thessalonica, Corinth, Ephesus. Some believed. Some blasphemed and plotted. Crispus, the ruler in Corinth, believed with his household. Jason’s house was attacked because the synagogue could not contain the argument. John will warn of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan—a charge against slander and persecution, not a slur on every assembly that reads Moses. The early church kept the pattern of gathered Word. It also learned that Moses read well will lead to the Lord of the Sabbath, or the reader will take up stones.
- As was His custom means the Son did not despise the local reading of Moses.
- After the reading, say it—is how the gospel first rode the synagogue lection.
- Best seats can hide a withered heart beside a withered hand.
- First to the synagogue is Paul’s debt to his kinsmen, not a closed strategy.
- Exclusion for the Son of Man is already in Jesus’ beatitude.
- Synagogue of Satan is moral verdict on a lying, persecuting gathering.
- The temple is sacrifice and presence in Jerusalem. The synagogue is Scripture in the town.
- The Custom – Sabbath; Moses and the Prophets read.
- The Invitation – Word of encouragement; Paul stands.
- The Authority – Not as the scribes; demons cry out.
- The Signs – Withered hand; bent woman; Jairus’s child.
- The Split – Some believe; some drive them out.
- The Seats – Honor loved; mercy skipped.
- The Warning – Slander dressed as assembly.
- Luke 4:16-21 – He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as was His custom, He went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and He stood up to read… “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”
- Luke 4:28-30 – When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath… they brought Him to the brow of the hill.
- Mark 1:21-27 – They went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and was teaching. They were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one who had authority.
- Mark 3:1-5 – Again He entered the synagogue, and a man was there with a withered hand.
- Matthew 23:6-7 – They love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues.
- Acts 13:14-16, 42-45 – On the Sabbath day they went into the synagogue and sat down. After the reading of the Law and the Prophets… “Brothers, if you have any word of encouragement for the people, say it.”
- Acts 17:1-5 – Paul went in, as was his custom, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures.
- Acts 18:4-8 – He reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath… Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue, believed in the Lord, together with his entire household.
- John 6:59 – Jesus said these things in the synagogue, as He taught at Capernaum.
- John 9:22 – The Jews had already agreed that if anyone should confess Jesus to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue.
- Luke 6:22 – Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your name as evil on account of the Son of Man.
- Revelation 2:9; 3:9 – I know the slander of those who say that they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.
- James 2:2 – If a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly (synagogue).
- Matthew 4:23 – He went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease.
He went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, as was His custom. Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.
He taught them as one who had authority.
After the reading of the Law and the Prophets—if you have any word of encouragement, say it.
They love the best seats in the synagogues.
If anyone should confess Jesus to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue.
Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue, believed in the Lord, together with his entire household.
Do not despise the place where Moses is read. Do not love the seat more than the Speaker. Hear the Book through to the Son. When the custom meets the Christ, believe. The assembly is for the Word—not for the trap, the slander, or the honor chair.
