Eliakim is the steward who received the key of the house of David.
I will clothe him with your robe,
and will bind your sash on him,
and will commit your authority to his hand.
I will place on his shoulder the key of the house of David.
He shall open, and none shall shut.
Eliakim son of Hilkiah is the servant God sets over the house in place of Shebna. Isaiah says he will be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah. The key of the house of David is placed on his shoulder. He opens, and none shuts. He shuts, and none opens. He is fastened like a peg in a secure place. The same chapter says the peg will give way, and the load hung on it will be cut off. The steward is real. The burden on him is too great to be the last word.
- He is over the household in the days of Hezekiah. He meets Rabshakeh with Shebna the scribe and Joah.
- Jesus holds the key Eliakim bore. The letter to Philadelphia says the holy one, the true one, has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut.
- Eliakim son of Josiah is a different man. Pharaoh Neco named him Jehoiakim. Do not merge the steward with the king.
The key on his shoulder is the picture. The peg gives way. The key does not. Jesus holds it.
The key of the house of David is on his shoulder.
He shall open, and none shall shut.
The peg gives way.
Jesus holds the key.
- Eliakim son of Hilkiah replaces Shebna over the household.
- The key of the house of David is placed on his shoulder.
- Opening and shutting belong to that office.
- He is a peg in a secure place, and the peg will give way.
- He stands with Hezekiah’s men before Rabshakeh.
- Jesus, not Eliakim, is the final holder of the key of David.
- The king renamed Jehoiakim is another Eliakim.
- The Man – Son of Hilkiah, servant of the Lord.
- The Office – Over the house, in Shebna’s place.
- The Robe – Clothed with the steward’s robe and sash.
- The Key – On his shoulder, the house of David.
- The Peg – Fastened firm, then giving way.
- The Fulfillment – The key in the hand of Christ.
- Isaiah 22:20-22 – “In that day I will call my servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and I will clothe him with your robe, and will bind your sash on him, and will commit your authority to his hand… And I will place on his shoulder the key of the house of David. He shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.”
- Isaiah 22:23-25 – “And I will fasten him like a peg in a secure place, and he will become a throne of honor to his father’s house… In that day, declares the Lord of hosts, the peg that was fastened in a secure place will give way, and it will be cut down and fall, and the load that was on it will be cut off.”
- 2 Kings 18:18 – “And when they called for the king, there came out to them Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebnah the secretary, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder.”
- 2 Kings 18:37 – “Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household… came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn and told him the words of the Rabshakeh.”
- Revelation 3:7 – “The words of the holy one, the true one, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens.”
- 2 Kings 23:34 – “And Pharaoh Neco made Eliakim the son of Josiah king in the place of Josiah his father, and changed his name to Jehoiakim.” This is not the steward.
I will call my servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah.

The peg that was fastened in a secure place will give way.
