The key of David is the key Jesus holds.
The words of the holy one, the true one,
who has the key of David,
who opens and no one will shut,
who shuts and no one opens.
I will place on his shoulder the key of the house of David.
I have set before you an open door,
which no one is able to shut.
Isaiah speaks the key first over Eliakim son of Hilkiah. The key of the house of David is placed on his shoulder. He opens, and none shuts. He shuts, and none opens. Jesus takes that key in the letter to Philadelphia. He is the holy one, the true one, who has the key of David. What He opens, no one will shut. What He shuts, no one opens. The open door before that church is this key at work.
- The key is authority over the house of David, not a local custom. He opens the door. Little power in Philadelphia does not close it.
- He also shuts. The synagogue of Satan is not given the key. They are told that He will make them know He has loved this church.
- The other six letters do not name the key. Ephesus is told He holds the seven stars. Philadelphia is told He has the key of David. Both are His hand. They are not the same image.
Eliakim bore the key on a shoulder. Jesus holds it as the holy one, the true one. The door He sets stays open. The door He shuts stays shut.
He has the key of David.
He opens, and no one shuts.
He shuts, and no one opens.
The open door is that key.
- Isaiah 22:22 puts the key of the house of David on Eliakim’s shoulder.
- Revelation 3:7 says Jesus has the key of David.
- Opening and shutting belong to Him alone.
- The open door before Philadelphia is the use of the key.
- The other six letters do not use this title.
- Holding the seven stars is a different image from holding this key.
- The House – The house of David.
- The Servant – Eliakim, the key on his shoulder.
- The Holder – Jesus, the holy one, the true one.
- The Act – He opens and shuts, and no one reverses it.
- The Door – Set before Philadelphia.
- The Limit – Named in one of the seven letters.
- Isaiah 22:22 – “And I will place on his shoulder the key of the house of David. He shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.”
- Revelation 3:7 – “And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: ‘The words of the holy one, the true one, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens.’”
- Revelation 3:8 – “Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut.”
- Revelation 1:18 – “I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.”
I will place on his shoulder the key of the house of David. He shall open, and none shall shut.
