Jehoiakim is Eliakim son of Josiah,
renamed by Pharaoh and set on Judah’s throne.
Pharaoh Neco made Eliakim the son of Josiah king,
and changed his name to Jehoiakim.
He did what was evil in the sight of the Lord.
The king cut the scroll and burned it in the fire.
Jehoiakim begins as Eliakim, son of Josiah. Pharaoh Neco deposes Jehoahaz, puts this brother on the throne, and changes his name. The new name does not make a new man. He taxes the land to pay Pharaoh. He does what is evil in the sight of the Lord. Nebuchadnezzar comes up, and Jehoiakim becomes his servant, then rebels. Jeremiah writes the words of the Lord on a scroll. Jehoiakim cuts the columns and burns them. The word is written again, and a word is added against the king.
- He is not Eliakim son of Hilkiah, the steward who bore the key of David. Same name at birth. A different man. The key was never his.
- David’s house still sits on the throne. This son of the house burns the word spoken to the house.
- His son Jehoiachin is taken to Babylon. The line continues. The king who burned the scroll does not end the promise.
A changed name and a throne did not give him the key. He burned the scroll. The word was written again.
Pharaoh changed his name to Jehoiakim.
