Lord of Hosts is the name of the God who commands armies heaven and earth cannot number.
Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
the whole earth is full of His glory.
The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Hosts are angels, stars, and the ranks of Israel.
The title means He is not a local shrine-god.
He is the Commander.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
Sabaoth means armies, companies, the massed strength that answers to one voice.
- Hannah prayed to the Lord of hosts at Shiloh when she asked for a son.
- David came against Goliath in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel.
- Isaiah saw the King, the Lord of hosts, and the house filled with smoke.
- Amos and Jeremiah used the name when the nations roared and when the temple itself would fall.
- Zechariah heard it again and again after exile: Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.
The New Testament keeps the Greek form: Lord of Sabaoth.
- James says the cries of unpaid workers have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts.
- Paul quotes Isaiah: If the Lord of hosts had not left us offspring, we would have been like Sodom.
Jesus can call twelve legions of angels. He is Mighty God on the Child’s name-list. The title comforts the remnant and terrifies the proud. Fortress and fire in one Name.
- Hosts are not decoration. They are ranks that move when He speaks.
- With us is the psalm’s point. The Commander is not far from Jacob.
