Remnant is the portion God keeps when judgment sweeps the rest.
Unless the Lord of hosts had left us a few survivors,
we should have been like Sodom.
At the present time there is a remnant,
chosen by grace.
Eight in the ark.
Seven thousand who had not bowed to Baal.
A stump in the land.
The word means what is left
—
and that the leaving was mercy.
Flood, exile, famine, and sword never take the last word if God has promised a people.
- Noah’s house floated.
- Joseph kept a family alive in Egypt.
- Elijah thought he was alone and was told of seven thousand.
- Isaiah named his son Shear-jashub—a remnant shall return—and saw a stump with a holy seed in it. After the exile a wounded community came home and rebuilt an altar.
- Paul stood in that stream.
Not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel. There is a remnant chosen by grace. If it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works. Gentiles were grafted in; Israel is not cast away; a partial hardening lasts until the fullness of the Gentiles comes in.
Remnant is therefore not a club of the morally lucky. It is God’s refusal to let His promise die when the nation or the world looks finished. Jesus spoke of a little flock. The Father’s good pleasure is to give them the kingdom. The church lives as remnant in a wide-gate world—not proud of being few, but sure that the Keepers of the remnant is God.
- Left us a remnant is confession, not a boast.
- Chosen by grace keeps remnant from becoming a new law.
- Elijah was wrong about being the only one. Isolation is often bad math.
- A stump can carry the holy seed. Cut down is not always rooted out.
- Remnant and mission meet: the kept become a light, not a bunker.
- All Israel and remnant are both in Paul. Do not cancel one with the other.
- Little flock is still given the kingdom.
- Kept through Judgment – Ark, exile, famine, sword.
- Chosen by Grace – Not a wage for survivors.
- The Stump – Holy seed in what looks dead.
- The Return – A remnant shall return.
- The Seven Thousand – Hidden faithfulness God still counts.
- Grafted In – Gentiles share the root; pride is forbidden.
- Little Flock – Few on the narrow way; kingdom still theirs.
- Isaiah 1:9 – “If the Lord of hosts had not left us a few survivors, we should have been like Sodom, and become like Gomorrah.”
- Romans 9:27-29 – “Isaiah cries out concerning Israel: ‘Though the number of the sons of Israel be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will be saved’… And as Isaiah predicted, ‘If the Lord of hosts had not left us offspring, we would have been like Sodom.’”
- Romans 11:5-6 – “So too at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace. But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.”
- Romans 11:2-4 – “Do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah… ‘I have kept for myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.’”
- 1 Kings 19:18 – “Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal.”
- Isaiah 6:13 – “And though a tenth remain in it, it will be burned again, like a terebinth or an oak, whose stump remains when it is felled. The holy seed is its stump.”

- Joel 2:32 – In Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape… and among the survivors shall be those whom the Lord calls.
- Genesis 7:23 – Only Noah was left, and those who were with him in the ark.
- Genesis 45:7 – God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant on earth.
- Luke 12:32 – “Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.”
- Matthew 7:14 – The gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
- Romans 11:25-26 – A partial hardening has come upon Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. And in this way all Israel will be saved.
- Revelation 12:17 – The dragon became furious with the woman and went off to make war on the rest of her offspring.
Unless the Lord of hosts had left us a few survivors, we should have been like Sodom.
At the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace.
I have kept for myself seven thousand who have not bowed the knee to Baal.
The holy seed is the stump. A remnant shall return.
Fear not, little flock. It is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.
Only Noah was left, and those who were with him in the ark.
Do not boast over the branches. Do not despair when the field looks empty. Grace keeps a people. Lean on the Lord. Stay in the remnant by mercy, not by pride.
