The Invalid at Bethesda is the man who lay thirty-eight years by a pool and walked when Jesus said, Get up.
Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool,
in Aramaic called Bethesda,
which has five roofed colonnades.
When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time,
He said to him, Do you want to be healed?
Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up.
Get up, take up your bed, and walk.
At once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked.
Now that day was the Sabbath.
See, you are well!
Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you.
A crowd of invalids waited on a superstition about stirred water. One man had waited almost a generation. Jesus picks him without a request first. Do you want to be healed? sounds obvious until you hear how hope can settle into a mat and a story: I have no one. The pool is his theology. Jesus gives him no escort into the water. He gives a command that makes the pool irrelevant. At once he walks. The bed that defined him becomes a Saturday scandal. The Jews say, It is not lawful to carry your bed. He answers, The man who healed me said take it up. He does not even know the Name yet. Jesus finds him in the temple later. Sin no more is not a claim that every fever is a certain crime. It is a warning that a worse thing than thirty-eight years exists. The Son works because the Father works until now. For this they sought to kill Him: He broke the Sabbath, and He called God His own Father, making Himself equal with God. Bethesda is mercy with a mat in public and a controversy that will not stay in the colonnades.
- Do you want to be healed unmasks a life organized around not being healed.
- I have no one is real loneliness and a small god named Stirred Water.
- Take up your bed is freedom that looks like Sabbath-breaking to small law.
- At once after thirty-eight years is the same adverb as Capernaum’s fever.
- He did not know who it was—grace can outrun information, then come find you.
- Sin no more aims at a worse ruin than a mat.
- My Father is working until now is why the pool is not the healer.
- The Pool – Five colonnades; waiting; stirred water.
- Thirty-Eight Years – A long time; known by Jesus.
- Do You Want – The question before the command.
- Get Up – No helper into the pool; walk.
- The Bed on the Sabbath – Sign and offense.
- The Temple Finding – A name attached; a warning given.
- Equal with God – The charge that grows from this work.
- John 5:1-9 – “Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades. In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed… One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, ‘Do you want to be healed?’ The sick man answered him, ‘Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Get up, take up your bed, and walk.’ And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked. Now that day was the Sabbath.”
- John 5:10-16 – “It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.”… “The man who healed me, that man said to me, ‘Take up your bed, and walk.’”… This was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath.
- John 5:14 – Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you.”
- John 5:17-18 – “My Father is working until now, and I am working.” This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.
- Mark 2:11 – “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.”
- John 5:8 – “Get up, take up your bed, and walk.”
- Isaiah 35:6 – Then shall the lame man leap like a deer.
- Exodus 20:8-10 – Remember the Sabbath day… you shall not do any work.
- John 9:14-16 – Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes.
Do you want to be healed? Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool.
Get up, take up your bed, and walk. At once the man was healed.
It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.
See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you.
My Father is working until now, and I am working.
Do not spend thirty-eight years watching water and missing the Voice. Want to be well. Take the mat. Meet Him again in the house of God. A worse thing than a long illness is a well body that will not leave sin. The Father is working. The Son is working. Walk.
