¶ The Paralytic Forgiven and Healed
The Paralytic Forgiven and Healed is the man let down through a Capernaum roof whose first gift was pardon.
When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, Son, your sins are forgiven.
Which is easier, to say, Your sins are forgiven, or to say, Rise, take up your bed and walk?
But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins
—
I say to you,
rise,
pick up your bed,
and go home.
He rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all.
They were all amazed and glorified God,
saying, We never saw anything like this.
He was at home. The house filled. Four men could not get their friend to the door, so they opened the roof. Faith came through the ceiling—theirs as much as his. Jesus saw it and did not first talk about legs. Son. Forgiven. Scribes tasted blasphemy. Who can forgive sins but God alone? He read their hearts and asked the easier-saying question. Talk is cheap either way. A walking man is the visible seal that the invisible word was not empty. Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins. That title from Daniel walks into a packed room and claims the prerogative of God, then proves it on a mat. Isaiah’s Servant takes illnesses. This scene will not let you split the package: the deeper paralysis is guilt, and the King heals both. Go home with your bed. The thing that carried you is now carried as a trophy of a word. Crowds glorify God. Some already plot. Authority that forgives will be charged as blasphemy until the cross, where the charge is made to stick—and is answered with a rent veil.
- Their faith is named. A man can ride to Jesus on other people’s grit.
- Forgiveness first tells you what Jesus thinks the real emergency is.
- Which is easier unmasks cheap talk and then spends a miracle to prove costly talk.
- Son of Man on earth is Daniel in a living room.
- Immediate walking is the sign; home-going is the point.
- Who can forgive but God is the right doctrine aimed at the wrong conclusion.
- The mat changes jobs: from prison to proof.
