¶ The Sheep and the Goats
The Sheep and the Goats is the last public picture Jesus gave of the nations before Him.
When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne.
Before Him will be gathered all the nations, and He will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
The King will say to those on His right, Come, you who are blessed by My Father, inherit the kingdom. To those on His left, Depart from Me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
Matthew sets this scene at the end of the Olivet Discourse, after virgins, talents, and a Master who returns.
Now the Son of Man is King on a throne.
- The flock is the nations.
- Separation is His work, as a shepherd knows his own.
- The surprise is the test He names. I was hungry, thirsty, a stranger, naked, sick, in prison.
- You did it—or you did not do it—to one of the least of these My brothers.
Both sides are startled. Lord, when?
- Neither group tracked the ledger the way they thought.
- The righteous inherit a kingdom prepared from the foundation of the world.
- The cursed go into fire prepared for the devil and his angels—not prepared for people as its first purpose, yet people enter it.
The story is not a new way to be saved by soup kitchens. It is the public evidence of a people who belonged to the King and treated His brothers as His. Faith without this mercy is the goat’s speech: we never saw You. He answers that they saw Him in the least and passed by.
- The Judge is the Shepherd-King. The throne and the flock meet in one Person.
- Nations are gathered. Persons are separated.
- My brothers is the key phrase. How you treated them is how you treated Him.
- Both camps are surprised. True sheep were not collecting points. True goats were not as blind as they claim.
- Inherit means the kingdom was prepared. Depart means the fire was prepared. Neither end is an accident.
- Eternal is used of both punishment and life. The duration language is the same.
- This scene does not cancel the cross. It displays what the cross produced—or did not produce.

When the Son of Man comes in His glory, He will sit on His glorious throne.
He will separate people as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
Come, you who are blessed by My Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
As you did it to one of the least of these My brothers, you did it to Me.
Depart from Me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.
Do not treat His brothers as optional. Do not treat mercy as a ladder to climb into the kingdom. The King already knows His sheep. The works will show it. The throne will not ask your opinion of the split.
