The Ten Virgins is the parable of a wedding night split by oil.
The kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom.
Five were foolish, and five were wise.
The foolish took no oil with them,
but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps.
As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept.
At midnight there was a cry: Here is the bridegroom!
Come out to meet him.
The foolish said, Give us some of your oil.
The wise said, Go and buy for yourselves.
The door was shut. Lord, lord, open to us.
Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.
Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.
Matthew sets this story at the head of three last pictures: virgins, talents, sheep and goats. All ten look ready. All ten have lamps. All ten sleep when the bridegroom is delayed. The difference is oil in reserve. Midnight is the hour no one scheduled. The cry comes. The wise trim and go in with him to the marriage feast. The foolish are still on the road to the dealers when the door shuts. Sharing oil is refused not from spite but because some things cannot be borrowed at the last cry. I do not know you is the same sentence heard by workers of lawlessness who said Lord, lord.
Watch therefore is the point. Delay is part of the story. Sleep is not the crime by itself; empty flasks are. The church can hold a lamp and still be unprepared for His appearing.
Belonging is not proved by walking in the procession.
It is proved by being known when the door is shut.
- Ten start together. Five finish inside. Nearness to the wise is not oil.
- Delay is expected in the parable. The wise packed for it.
- All slept. Watchfulness is more than refusing a nap. It is having what the midnight requires.
- Oil cannot be transferred in the street at the cry.
- The door shuts. Lord, lord does not pry it open.
- I do not know you is relational, not a paperwork error.
- Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour—the same refrain as the thief in the night.

Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’ Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”
