Take up this proverb against the king of Babylon,
and say,
How hath the oppressor ceased!
Is this the man that made the earth to tremble?
The king of Babylon is the man Isaiah’s proverb is spoken against. The Lord has broken the staff of the wicked and the sceptre of the rulers. The whole earth is at rest. Then the word turns on the king: How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning. He said, I will be like the most High. He is brought down to the sides of the pit. They that see him ask, Is this the man? Nebuchadnezzar was the great king of that empire. The proverb is not a biography of one reign. It is the taunt against the throne that oppressed the earth, and the language rises above the man.
