¶ Body and Soul
Body and soul refers to the dual nature of human beings as presented in Scripture
—
a physical body formed from the dust and an immaterial soul (or spirit) given by God.
Together they make up the whole person, created in the image of God and designed for relationship with Him.
At death the body returns to the dust while the soul continues in conscious existence;
at the resurrection the body is raised and reunited with the soul for the eternal state.
This teaching guards both the dignity of the physical body and the reality of the immaterial aspect of human life.
Scripture presents human beings as unified persons composed of material and immaterial aspects. God formed the body from the dust of the ground and breathed into it the breath of life, and man became a living soul. The body is not a prison to be escaped, nor is the soul a mere function of the brain. Both are created by God and both are included in His redemptive purpose. Salvation concerns the whole person: the soul is saved at conversion, the life is progressively sanctified, and the body will be raised in glory at the return of Christ. Understanding body and soul helps believers value physical life, face death with hope, and look forward to the resurrection.
- Human beings are not purely material, nor are they purely spiritual; they are embodied souls (or ensouled bodies).
- The body is created by God and declared good; it is to be presented to God as a living sacrifice and is the temple of the Holy Spirit.
- The soul (or spirit) is the immaterial aspect that thinks, feels, wills, and relates to God; it survives bodily death.
- Scripture sometimes uses “soul” and “spirit” interchangeably, and sometimes distinguishes them; in either case the immaterial part of the person continues after death.

¶ Key Aspects of Body and Soul
- Creation – God forms the body from dust and gives the breath of life; the whole person is made in His image.
- Unity of the Person – Body and soul are distinct yet designed to function as a single human being.
- The Body – Physical, mortal, capable of good and of sin; to be honored and presented to God; destined for resurrection.
- The Soul / Spirit – Immaterial, conscious, the seat of thought, emotion, will, and spiritual relationship with God; survives death.
- Death – Temporary separation of body and soul; the body returns to dust, the soul enters the intermediate state.
- Resurrection – The body is raised and transformed, reunited with the soul for the eternal state.
- Redemption of the Whole Person – Salvation begins with the soul and will be completed in the resurrection of the body.
- Genesis 2:7 – “Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.”
- Ecclesiastes 12:7 – “The dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.”
- Matthew 10:28 – “Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.”
- 2 Corinthians 5:1-8 – We groan in this tent (body), longing to put on our heavenly dwelling; away from the body is to be at home with the Lord.
- Philippians 1:21-24 – To live is Christ and to die is gain; to depart and be with Christ is far better, yet to remain in the flesh is necessary for others.
- 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 – “Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you… You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”
- 1 Corinthians 15:42-44 – The body is sown perishable, raised imperishable; sown a natural body, raised a spiritual body.
- 1 Thessalonians 5:23 – “May your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
- James 2:26 – “The body apart from the spirit is dead.”
- Genesis 1:26-27 – God creates man in His own image, male and female.
- Romans 8:23 – We who have the firstfruits of the Spirit groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for the redemption of our bodies.
Body and soul together make up the human person as God designed us. The body is not disposable, and the soul is not an afterthought. God created both, cares for both, and will redeem both. At death they are separated for a time, but the promise of resurrection guarantees that the separation is not final for those who are in Christ. The Christian hope is not the escape of the soul from the body, but the resurrection of the body and the eternal life of the whole person in the presence of God. Therefore we honor the body as God’s creation and temple, care for the soul as the seat of our relationship with Him, and look forward to the day when both will be made perfect in the likeness of the risen Christ.
