Christian Doctrine is
the body of essential truths taught in Scripture
that summarize what Christians believe about
God, Christ, salvation, the church, and the last things.
It is the ordered expression of the faith
once for all delivered to the saints.
Sound doctrine guards the gospel,
shapes worship, guides holy living,
and unites the church in the truth.
While no human summary equals Scripture itself,
Christian doctrine seeks
to set forth clearly what God has revealed.
Doctrine is not a cold or optional addition to the Christian faith. From the beginning the church devoted itself to the apostles’ teaching, and the New Testament repeatedly urges believers to hold fast to sound doctrine, teach it, and contend for it. Christian doctrine simply means the teaching of the Christian faith as it is drawn from the Bible. It answers the great questions: Who is God? Who is Jesus? What is salvation? How should we live? What is our hope? When doctrine is faithful to Scripture it produces clarity, stability, worship, and obedience. When it is neglected or distorted, the church becomes vulnerable to error and confusion. True doctrine always leads to the glory of God and the good of His people.

Sound doctrine brings clarity where the world brings confusion, stability where false teaching brings instability, and worship where error brings distraction. Because it is drawn from Scripture, it remains always subject to Scripture and is to be held with both conviction and humility. The goal of all doctrinal study is not mere knowledge, but the knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness and to the greater glory of the triune God.
