Soteriology is the doctrine of salvation
—
the study of God’s work in rescuing sinners
from sin, death, and judgment
and bringing them into eternal life
through Jesus Christ.
It encompasses the eternal plan of God,
the finished work of Christ on the cross,
the application of redemption by the Holy Spirit,
and the final consummation of salvation in glory.
Biblical soteriology is
thoroughly God-centered, Christ-centered,
and grounded in grace from beginning to end.
It answers the great question:
How can a sinful human being be made right with a holy God
and live forever in His presence?
The word “soteriology” comes from the Greek sōtēria (salvation) and logos (word or study). Scripture presents salvation as the central purpose of God’s redemptive revelation. From the first promise of a Redeemer in Genesis 3:15 to the final invitation of Revelation 22, the Bible tells the story of how God saves. Soteriology therefore examines the eternal purpose of the Father, the atoning work of the Son, and the applying work of the Spirit. It includes election, calling, regeneration, faith and repentance, justification, adoption, sanctification, perseverance, and glorification. Salvation is not merely the forgiveness of sins; it is the complete deliverance of the whole person — spirit, soul, and body — into the fullness of life with God. It is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, to the glory of God alone. Every other doctrine finds its practical center in soteriology, for the gospel is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.

Soteriology is the doctrine of the greatest work God has ever done for humanity — the saving of sinners through Jesus Christ. It begins in eternity with the Father’s purpose, is accomplished in history by the Son’s obedience unto death, and is applied by the Spirit to all who believe. Salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. It is complete in its foundation, progressive in its outworking, and certain in its final outcome. The same God who began the good work will bring it to completion. Therefore rest in the finished work of Christ. Proclaim the gospel with confidence. And live in the hope of the full salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. Salvation belongs to the Lord — and He has given it freely in His Son.
