¶ Wheat and Chaff
Wheat and Chaff is the picture of the Lord’s harvest when He clears His threshing floor.
John said the Coming One has His winnowing fork in His hand.
He will gather His wheat into the barn and burn the chaff with unquenchable fire.
Wheat is the grain He keeps.
Chaff is the husk the wind and the fire take.
The difference is not weight of reputation.
It is whether there is a kernel the King will store.
On a threshing floor the sheaves are crushed and thrown into the air. Grain falls. Husks fly.
- John the Baptist stood in the Jordan and would not let Israel treat baptism as a family badge. Brood of vipers, he said. Bear fruit worthy of repentance. Do not say, We have Abraham as our father. The axe is laid to the root. Then the fork: wheat into the barn, chaff into fire that is not put out.
- The psalms had already called the wicked chaff that the wind drives away, while the righteous is a tree planted by streams.
- Hosea said Ephraim had become a cake not turned, and the chaff of the summer threshing floor.
- Jesus used barns and fire in the parable of the weeds as well, but weeds are a second sowing.
Chaff is what is left when the same head is broken and found empty. A person can stand in the field of Israel, or in a church, and still be husk. The Spirit and fire John promised are not two moods. The Messiah baptizes with the Holy Spirit and fire. He gathers. He burns. The floor will be cleared. No mixture is left on it when He is done.
- Winnowing is separation by the Lord, not by a mob with pitchforks.
- Chaff once clung to the wheat. Nearness is not the same as grain.
- Abraham as father does not survive the fork.
- Unquenchable fire is John’s word. Softening it does not honor the prophet.
- Psalm 1 and the Baptist preach the same harvest in two keys.
- Fruit worthy of repentance is the first evidence of wheat.
- The barn is as real as the fire. The King keeps what is His.

The Lord knows the way of the righteous. The way of the wicked will perish. Be wheat. Abide. Bear fruit.
