The afterlife refers to
the conscious existence of human beings
after physical death.
The Bible teaches that
death is not the end of a person’s existence.
Instead, every person continues to exist
either in the presence of God
or in a state of separation from Him,
awaiting the final resurrection and judgment.
¶ Biblical Teaching on Death and What Follows
Scripture presents a clear sequence of events after death:
- At death, the body returns to the dust, but the spirit continues to exist (Ecclesiastes 12:7).
- Believers go immediately to be with Christ (2 Corinthians 5:8; Philippians 1:21-23; Luke 23:43).
- Unbelievers enter a place of conscious waiting and distress (Luke 16:19-31).
- At the return of Christ, there will be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous (John 5:28-29; Acts 24:15).
- Final judgment will follow, resulting in either eternal life in the new heaven and new earth or eternal punishment in the lake of fire (Revelation 20:11-15; 21:1-8).
Between death and the final resurrection, believers and unbelievers experience different realities:
- Believers — “Away from the body and at home with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:8). Jesus told the repentant thief, “Today you will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43).
- Unbelievers — A place of conscious torment often called Hades in the New Testament (Luke 16:23-24).
This intermediate state is temporary. The final and eternal state comes after the resurrection and judgment.
After the resurrection and final judgment:
- For believers — Eternal life in the new heaven and new earth, where God will dwell with His people forever (Revelation 21:1-4). There will be no more death, mourning, crying, or pain.
- For unbelievers — Eternal separation from God in the lake of fire, also called the second death (Revelation 20:14-15; 21:8).
