An Advocate is one who comes alongside to speak, plead, or intercede on behalf of another.
In Scripture, Jesus Christ is the Advocate with the Father for all who belong to Him.
The Holy Spirit is also called another Advocate (Helper, Comforter) who stands with believers.
This dual advocacy gives the people of God strong comfort: the Son intercedes in heaven, and the Spirit helps on earth.
The word translated “Advocate” (Greek paraklētos) means one who is called to the side of another to help, counsel, or plead a case. In the courtroom sense, Jesus is the righteous Advocate who appears before the Father on behalf of His people when they sin. He does not plead their innocence but presents His own finished work as the ground of their acceptance. At the same time, Jesus promised to send “another Advocate” — the Holy Spirit — who would be with believers forever, teaching, reminding, convicting, and strengthening them. Together, the advocacy of the Son and the Spirit assures believers that they are never left alone in their weakness or failure.

At the same time, the Holy Spirit lives within as another Advocate, teaching, strengthening, and interceding. Because of this double advocacy, the people of God may fall, but they cannot fall away from the care of the triune God. The call is not to presume upon grace, but to walk in the light with confidence, knowing that when we do sin we have an Advocate with the Father — and a Helper who never leaves us.
