The Net is the last field parable of Matthew 13.
The kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind.
When it was full,
men drew it ashore,
sat down,
and sorted the good into containers and threw the bad away.
So it will be at the end of the age.
The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace.
In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Jesus has already told of wheat and weeds growing together until harvest. The net says the same thing from the water. The kingdom in this age is a cast, not a finished bowl. It gathers every kind. Fullness comes. Then the sit-down. Then the sort. The sea is the world. The dragnet does not ask the fish their names while it is still in the water. Mission looks like that. Churches look like that. Mixed catch is not a surprise and not a proof that the kingdom has failed. The end of the age is the shore. Angels do the separating, as they do with the weeds. Good and bad are not market grades only. Jesus names them evil and righteous. The furnace and the weeping are the same words He used of the weeds. He asked if they understood all these things. They said yes. Then He spoke of the householder’s treasure, new and old. The net is part of that store. Do not call the drag the final judgment. Do not call the final judgment a myth. Fish now. Sort then.
