“Principalities and powers” is
a biblical phrase used to describe
ranks of spiritual authorities
and rulers in the unseen realms.
These terms refer to organized spiritual forces
—
both good and evil
—
that exercise authority and influence
over people, nations, and territories.
In the context of spiritual warfare,
they most often refer to
demonic powers that oppose God and His people.
¶ Meaning of the Terms
- Principalities (Greek: archē) — Refers to rulers, leaders, or those who hold first place or chief authority.
- Powers (Greek: exousia) — Refers to authorities or those who have been given the right to rule or exercise power.
Together, these terms describe a structured hierarchy of spiritual beings who operate with authority in the unseen realm. While the Bible sometimes uses these words for human governments, in many passages (especially in Paul’s letters) they refer to spiritual entities.
¶ Biblical Usage
The phrase “principalities and powers” appears in several key New Testament passages:
- Ephesians 6:12 — “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”
- Colossians 1:16 — Speaks of Christ creating “thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities.”
- Colossians 2:15 — Jesus “disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them.”
- Ephesians 3:10 — The church makes known God’s wisdom “to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places.”
- Romans 8:38 — Nothing can separate us from God’s love, including “neither angels nor rulers.”
These passages show that there is an organized spiritual hierarchy in both the kingdom of God and the kingdom of darkness.
¶ Connection to Spiritual Warfare
Principalities and powers are actively involved in spiritual warfare. They seek to:
- Influence and control nations and cultures (Daniel 10:13, 20)
- Promote deception and false ideologies
- Oppress individuals and communities
- Hinder the spread of the gospel
- Maintain strongholds of sin and bondage
Ephesians 6:12 makes it clear that our primary battle is not against people, but against these spiritual forces that operate behind the scenes.
¶ New Testament Emphasis
The New Testament emphasizes that Jesus Christ has already defeated the principalities and powers:
- Through His death and resurrection, Christ disarmed them and triumphed over them publicly (Colossians 2:15).
- Believers have been raised with Christ and seated with Him “far above all rule and authority and power and dominion” (Ephesians 1:21; 2:6).
- The church has been given authority to stand against these powers through the armor of God and the power of the Holy Spirit.
While these forces are still active, they are ultimately defeated and operating on borrowed time.
¶ Key Scriptures
- Ephesians 1:21 “…far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.”
- Christ is not one power among many. After the resurrection He was seated far above every rank in the unseen world. Rule, authority, power, and dominion are real. They are not rivals of the Son. His name outranks every name in this age and in the age to come. The church does not climb above the powers. She is joined to the One who already is.
- Ephesians 2:6 “…and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.”
- The same realm where the powers operate is the realm where the saints sit—in Christ. This is not a boast that believers have become angels. It is union with the seated Lord. The battlefield is heavenly. The church’s position is already with Him there. Walk on earth as those whose seat is not under the powers but with the King who is over them.
- Ephesians 3:10 “…so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places.”
- The church is a message the unseen rulers cannot ignore. God’s many-sided wisdom is put on display through a people from every nation made one in Christ. Principalities watch. They are not the audience God exists to please. They are shown what the cross has done. Unity in the gospel is not small. Heaven’s powers are meant to see it.
- Ephesians 6:12 “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”
- The fight is not finally people. It is against organized evil in the heavenly places. Flesh and blood can be used, but they are not the enemy to hate. Armor is required because the conflict is spiritual. Stand. Do not pretend the darkness has no structure, and do not treat your neighbor as the throne behind the darkness.
- Colossians 1:16 “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.”
- Thrones and dominions did not create themselves. They were made through the Son and for the Son. Even rebel powers exist in a universe that belongs to Christ. He is before all things. They are creatures. Worship the Maker, not the ranks He made. The invisible order is not a second god.
- Colossians 2:15 “He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.”
- The cross was a triumph, not a defeat that later got reversed. He stripped the rulers. He made a public example of them. The powers still rage, but they do not hold the weapons they once claimed over the guilty. Forgiveness of sins is the disarming. Do not live as if the defeated host still owns you.
- Romans 8:38 “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
- Rulers and powers are listed among the things that cannot separate. They can accuse, afflict, and frighten. They cannot cut the love of God in Christ. The chain of Romans 8 ends here. If you are in the Son, the ranks of heaven and hell do not get a veto on that love.
- 1 Corinthians 15:24 “Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.”
- The reign of Christ has a goal. Every rule, authority, and power that still resists will be abolished. The last enemy is death. Already and not yet meet here: He reigns now; He has not yet put every enemy down where you can see it. The end is not a stalemate with the powers. It is their destruction and the kingdom given to the Father.
- Daniel 10:13, 20 “The prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days, but Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me… Then he said, ‘Do you know why I have come to you? But now I will return to fight against the prince of Persia; and when I go out, behold, the prince of Greece will come.’”
- Daniel is shown that empires have princes in the unseen realm. Persia and Greece are not only maps. A holy messenger is delayed. Michael helps. The fight continues when the next empire rises. This is not a chart for speculation. It is why prayer and fasting in chapter 10 matter, and why earthly history is not all that it appears. God still sends His word. The nations do not outrun His purpose.
