Selah is the word the psalms leave in the margin
when the singer is told to stop
and weigh what was just said.
The exact meaning is not spelled out.
It stands seventy-one times in the Psalms
and three times in Habakkuk’s prayer.
Many take it as a pause,
a lift of the voice,
or an instrumental interlude.
The root can mean to weigh, to lift up, to hang.
Whatever the temple musicians did with it,
the word still tells the reader:
do not rush the line you just sang.
Selah is not a doctrine and not a blank. It sits inside prayers—after a vow, after a woe, after a shout that the Lord of hosts is with us. Psalm 3 ends a night of enemies with Selah, then again after the shield, then again after the cry to arise. Psalm 46 sets it under the refrain: the Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Habakkuk 3 uses it in a prayer about the Lord’s march and the day of trouble, then says, yet I will rejoice in the Lord. So the word lives where praise and dread share a page. Some ancient notes treat it as a signal to the players. Some tie it to “forever,” from a similar spelling. Scripture never defines it in a verse. That honesty belongs on the page. What the placement teaches is plain enough. The singer is not to slide past the Name, the fortress, the enemy, or the vow. Lift it. Weigh it. Let the instruments speak while the heart catches up. Be still, and know that I am God sits in a psalm that also says Selah. The pause and the knowledge belong together.
- The Bible uses the word often and never glosses it. Hold the uncertainty.
- Pause, lift, and weigh are the oldest serious guesses. They can all be true at once.
- It clusters after lines worth stopping on—not after filler.
- Habakkuk’s prayer shows it is not only a Psalms heading. It is worship speech.
- Forever is a possible cousin, not a proved translation.
- The point for the reader is the stop, even if the choir’s cue is lost.
- Be still is the sister command in the same book.

Yet I will rejoice in the Lord.
Do not skip the word because the choir cue is lost. Stop. Weigh the line. The Lord of hosts is with us. Salvation belongs to the Lord. Lift that. Then sing on.
