He Took Our Illnesses is Matthew’s sentence over a Sabbath evening in Capernaum.
That evening they brought to Him many who were oppressed by demons.
He cast out the spirits with a word and healed all who were sick.
This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah:
He took our illnesses and bore our diseases.
Isaiah had said griefs and sorrows.
Matthew sees those words walking into Peter’s street when the sun goes down.
Isaiah 53 is the Servant who is despised, wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities. By His stripes we are healed. The first hearers knew sin, exile, and wounds that were more than skin. Matthew, after the fever in Simon’s house and the crowds at the door, takes the prophet’s line and lays it on bodily healing and the casting out of spirits. He took. He bore. The verbs are carrying verbs. Jesus does not watch illness from the synagogue steps. He takes it up as the Servant takes the iniquity of us all. The Gospel will go on to the cross, where the bearing is finished in blood. Peter will write, He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree… by His wounds you have been healed—and the healing there is a people returning from straying. Both uses stand. The Capernaum door is not a smaller Savior than Golgotha. It is the same Servant already carrying what He will nail to the wood. Every fever He rebuked was a down payment, not a different savior. Every sinner He forgave was the same burden. Do not empty Matthew to protect Isaiah. Do not empty the cross to make Capernaum a health contract. He took. That is the news.

He healed all who were sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: He took our illnesses and bore our diseases.
Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows. With His wounds we are healed. The Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree. By His wounds you have been healed. You were straying like sheep.
He touched her hand, and the fever left her.
We wait for the redemption of our bodies. He will wipe away every tear.
Do not split the Servant. He took fevers in Capernaum and sin at the cross. Bring the sick. Bring the guilt. He is the One who carries. The evening crowd was a sign. The tree was the bearing in full. The last city has no pain.
