Peace Be Still is the word Jesus spoke to the wind and the sea.
He awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea,
Peace! Be still!
The wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
Two syllables over chaos,
and the water remembered its place.
The command is not a slogan for mood.
It is the voice creation already knows.
Mark keeps the verbs sharp. He rebuked the wind. He said to the sea, Siopa, pephimoso—Silence. Be muzzled. The same sort of word He used on unclean spirits. Peace here is not a treaty. It is order restored by the One who shut the sea with doors and said, Thus far and no farther. The disciples had shouted about perishing. He does not bargain with the squall. He addresses it. Great storm, then great calm: the contrast is the point. Psalm 107 had already sung this scene—He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed. Then they were glad that the waters were quiet, and He brought them to their desired haven. Peace, be still is Mighty God in a sentence. It is also a word the church learns to hear inward when the boat is full and He seems asleep. He may not always hush the lake on your clock. He has already spoken a greater peace: My peace I give to you. In Me you may have peace. In the world, tribulation. Take heart. I have overcome the world. The sea still knows that voice.
- The command is spoken to creation, not first as a self-help chant.
- Rebuke means the storm is treated as out of order, not as god.
- Be still is muzzle-language. Chaos is not invited to keep talking.
- Great calm is the miracle’s measure. Halfway quiet is not this word.
- Psalm 107 wrote the pattern before the boat left shore.
- His peace given to disciples is cousin to this command, not a replacement for faith.
- The other side was already promised. Peace, be still serves the crossing.

Peace! Be still! The wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

Thus far shall you come, and no farther.
Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. In Me you may have peace.

Do not turn the command into wallpaper. It was a voice over real water. Cry to Him in the filling boat. Trust the word that already said the other side. Let His peace stand guard. The sea still knows when it has been told to stop.
