Daniel’s 70th Week is the final seven-year period
in the prophecy of the seventy weeks.
Seventy weeks are decreed
about your people and your holy city.
He shall make a strong covenant
with many for one week.
The prophecy is given to Daniel in Daniel 9:24-27. These are weeks of years (70 × 7 = 490 years). Seventy weeks (seventy sevens) are decreed for Israel and Jerusalem.
The first sixty-nine weeks run from the decree to rebuild Jerusalem to the coming of the Messiah. After that, the Messiah is cut off. This refers to the crucifixion of Jesus.
There is a gap of unknown length between the first 69 weeks and the final 70th.
The final week is the seventieth. In that week a prince makes a strong covenant with many for one week, and in the middle of the week he puts an end to sacrifice and offering. This is the abomination of desolation.
- Many understand the seventieth week as a future seven-year period still ahead, often identified with the Tribulation.
- The middle of the week is the point of the abomination of desolation, when sacrifice ceases and desolation is set up.
- The period ends with the Second Coming of Christ and leads into the Millennium.
- The page on Dispensationalism describes one common framework for this reading. Other views place the seventieth week in the first century or see it as fulfilled in a different way.
The text itself is about Daniel’s people and the holy city. The weeks are counted. The last week is distinguished from the sixty-nine that precede it.
