Days of Noah is Jesus’ own comparison for the coming of the Son of Man.
As were the days of Noah,
so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
They were eating and drinking,
marrying and giving in marriage,
until the day Noah entered the ark,
and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away.
Ordinary life ran to the edge of judgment.
The warning had been public.
The door shut.
Then the water.
The Olivet Discourse answers, When will these things be, and what will be the sign of Your coming? After cosmic signs and a lesson from the fig tree, Jesus reaches for Genesis. The point is not that the last days will be only about boats. The point is the mood of a world that will not be interrupted. Eating, drinking, marrying—good gifts treated as the whole story. Unaware is the word. Noah was a herald of righteousness. God’s patience waited while the ark was being prepared. Eight went in. The Lord shut him in. The rest kept the calendar of meals and weddings until there was no calendar left.
Luke pairs the days of Noah with the days of Lot: they bought, sold, planted, built—until Lot went out and fire fell. Remember Lot’s wife. Two men in a field, two women grinding; one taken and one left. Watch, therefore. The days of Noah are a mirror held up to every generation that calls delay proof that nothing is coming. Peter says scoffers will say, Where is the promise of His coming? They deliberately forget the flood. The church is not told to stop marrying or eating. It is told not to live as if the ark were a myth and the Son of Man a rumor.
- Unaware is the sin under the meals. Not hunger. Not marriage. Blindness.
- Until the day is how close normal can sit to the end.
- The ark was visible. Unbelief is not always lack of information.
- Patience waited. Patience is not permission to stay outside.
- Lot’s days stand beside Noah’s. Water and fire; same unawareness.
- One taken and one left makes the split personal, not merely global.
- Scoffers forget on purpose. Memory of the flood is part of watchfulness.
- As It Was – Jesus binds that age to His appearing.
- Eating and Marrying – Common life as if it were ultimate.
- The Herald – Noah preaching while he built.
- The Shut Door – Entered; then no more entering.
- Unaware – Swept away still holding the ordinary.
- Days of Lot – The twin picture: fire after a normal morning.
- Watch – The command that follows the comparison.
- Matthew 24:37-39 – “For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.”
- Matthew 24:40-42 – Two men in the field; one taken and one left. Two women grinding; one taken and one left. Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.
- Luke 17:26-32 – “Just as it was in the days of Noah, so will it be in the days of the Son of Man… Likewise, just as it was in the days of Lot—they were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building, but on the day when Lot went out from Sodom, fire and sulfur rained from heaven and destroyed them all—so will it be on the day when the Son of Man is revealed… Remember Lot’s wife.”
- Genesis 6:5-8, 13 – Wickedness great; every intention only evil continually; Noah found favor; I have determined to make an end of all flesh.
- Genesis 7:16 – The Lord shut him in.
- Hebrews 11:7 – By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.
- 2 Peter 2:5 – He preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly.
- 1 Peter 3:20 – God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared.
- 2 Peter 3:3-7 – Scoffers will come… “Where is the promise of his coming?” They deliberately overlook that the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished. The present heavens and earth are stored up for fire.
- Genesis 19:14, 26 – Lot’s sons-in-law thought he was jesting. Lot’s wife looked back.
- Matthew 24:44 – The Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.
- 1 Thessalonians 5:2-6 – The day of the Lord comes like a thief; let us not sleep as others do, but keep awake and be sober.
- Luke 21:34-36 – Watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap.
As were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
They were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark.
They were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away.
God’s patience waited while the ark was being prepared. The Lord shut him in.
Just as it was in the days of Lot. Remember Lot’s wife.
Scoffers deliberately forget the flood. The present world is stored up for fire.
Stay awake. Do not let a normal morning lie to you. The warning is already public. Enter while the door is open. Watch. You do not know the day.
