Thief in the Night is the Lord’s picture of a coming no one calendars.
The day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.
If the master of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming,
he would not have left his house to be broken into.
You also must be ready,
for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.
Behold, I am coming like a thief!
Blessed is the one who stays awake, keeping his garments on.
The point is not that He is a criminal.
The point is that He will not send you the hour.
Jesus used the thief to kill date-setting and sleep. A household that knew the watch would have stayed dressed. Because they do not know, they must stay dressed always.
Paul takes the same image to Thessalonica. People will say peace and security, then sudden destruction. But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief. You are children of light. Watch and be sober.
Peter uses it of the world’s last fire: the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and the heavens will pass away.
Revelation puts the words in the Lord’s own mouth in the middle of the bowls. Coming like a thief is how the holy interrupts the smug. It is also how He treats His own—as people who should have kept the lamp lit. Some of The Ten Virgins slept through a delay and woke to a shut door. The watchful servants open at once when He knocks.
Thief-language does not make the church frantic. It makes the church awake. The day is not uncertain to Him. It is unadvertised to us.
- Like a thief describes the hour, not His character.
- Peace and security is the slogan of people about to be surprised.
- Children of light are not appointed to wrath. They are appointed to stay awake.
- Garments on means readiness you can wear through the night.
- Sudden is how it feels to the dark, not how it feels to the One who comes.
- Knowing the day would replace watching. He refused to give it.
- The same image serves Olivet, Paul, Peter, and the Apocalypse. One warning.
- Unknown Hour – Not even the angels; the Father’s keeping.
- Broken House – What happens to the unwatchful master.
- Peace and Security – The lie before sudden destruction.
- Children of Light – That day should not surprise you like a thief.
- Stay Awake – Sober, dressed, lamps burning.
- Day of the Lord – Fire, passing heavens, exposed works.
- Blessed Watcher – He comes like a thief; blessing on the one who stayed ready.
- 1 Thessalonians 5:2-6 – “For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, ‘There is peace and security,’ then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief. For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober.”
- Matthew 24:42-44 – “Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”
- Luke 12:39-40 – If the master of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have left his house to be broken into. You also must be ready.
- 2 Peter 3:10 – “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.”
- Revelation 16:15 – “Behold, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake, keeping his garments on, that he may not go about naked and be seen exposed!”
- Revelation 3:3 – “Remember, then, what you received and heard. Keep it, and repent. If you will not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come against you.”
- Matthew 24:36 – Concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.
- Matthew 25:13 – Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.
- Luke 12:35-37 – Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning; blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake.
- Matthew 24:37-39 – As were the days of Noah… they were unaware.
- 1 Thessalonians 5:8-9 – Put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. God has not destined us for wrath.
- Revelation 3:18 – Buy from Me white garments so that you may clothe yourself and the shame of your nakedness may not be seen.

You know neither the day nor the hour.
Do not hunt the date. Hunt readiness. Stay dressed. Keep the lamp. He will not send the hour. He will send the Son.
