Noah’s Ark is the vessel God commanded,
Noah built,
and the Lord shut.
Make yourself an ark of gopher wood.
Make rooms in the ark,
and cover it inside and out with pitch.
By faith Noah,
being warned concerning events as yet unseen,
constructed an ark for the saving of his household.
Eight persons were brought safely through water.
The ark is not a toy.
It is the only house that floated when the world did not.
The earth was filled with violence. God told one man the dimensions, the door, the window, the stores, the animals, and the covenant. One hundred twenty years of patience ran while the hull rose in dry weather. Hebrews says the building itself condemned the world. Noah became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith. They went in. Male and female. Clean and unclean. The Lord shut him in—so the safety was God’s latch, not Noah’s nerve. Waters prevailed above the mountains. The ark rested on the mountains of Ararat. A window opened. A raven. A dove. An olive leaf. Dry ground. An altar.
Peter says baptism corresponds to this: not a bath for skin, but an appeal to God for a good conscience through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The ark is therefore timber and type. Christ is the better refuge—entered by faith, shut by God, carried through judgment, opened on the other side. There was one door. There was no second boat.
- Warned of things not yet seen. Faith built before the first drop.
- Pitch within and without. The same word-family as atonement-cover in Hebrew memory.
- Rooms, stores, and kinds: provision as precise as the rain.
- The Lord shut him in. Security is a divine act.
- Eight souls. Remnant, not a crowded deck of the decent.
- Through water, not around it. Salvation passed through the judgment.
- One door. The type points to the Son, not to a fleet of options.
- Commanded – Measure, wood, pitch, door, window.
- Built in Faith – Events as yet unseen; a herald at work.
- Entered – Household and living creatures as God said.
- Shut In – The Lord closed the door.
- Carried – Lifted above the mountains; rest on Ararat.
- Opened – Window, birds, dry ground, worship.
- Type – Through water to a new earth; baptism and the risen Christ.
- Genesis 6:14-16, 18 – “Make yourself an ark of gopher wood. Make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch. This is how you are to make it: the length of the ark 300 cubits, its breadth 50 cubits, and its height 30 cubits. Make a roof for the ark, and finish it to a cubit above, and set the door of the ark in its side. Make it with lower, second, and third decks… I will establish my covenant with you, and you shall come into the ark, you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you.”
- Genesis 7:1, 7, 16 – “Go into the ark, you and all your household, for I have seen that you are righteous before me in this generation.”… And the Lord shut him in.
- Genesis 7:17-20 – The waters increased and bore up the ark, and it rose high above the earth. The waters prevailed so mightily that all the high mountains under the whole heaven were covered.
- Genesis 8:4, 6-12, 20 – The ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat. Noah opened the window. The dove brought a freshly plucked olive leaf. Noah built an altar to the Lord.
- Hebrews 11:7 – “By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.”
- 1 Peter 3:20-21 – “God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.”
- 2 Peter 2:5 – He preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others.
- Matthew 24:38-39 – Until the day when Noah entered the ark; they were unaware until the flood came.
- Genesis 6:3 – My Spirit shall not abide in man forever… his days shall be 120 years.
- Genesis 9:8-17 – Covenant with Noah and with every living creature; bow in the cloud.
- John 10:9 – I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved.
- Acts 4:12 – There is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.
- Psalm 29:10 – The Lord sits enthroned over the flood.
- Isaiah 54:9 – This is like the days of Noah to Me: as I swore that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth.

Build while the ground is dry. Enter while the door is open. He shuts. He carries. He opens on the other side. Hide in the better Ark—the risen Christ.
