Solomon’s Temple is the house David desired and Solomon built on Mount Moriah.
The house that I am to build will be great,
for our God is greater than all gods.
When the priests came out of the Holy Place,
a cloud filled the house of the Lord,
so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud,
for the glory of the Lord filled the house.
Will God indeed dwell on the earth?
Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain You;
how much less this house that I have built.
Yet have regard to the prayer of Your servant.
David had rest from enemies and wanted a house for the ark. The Lord said a son would build it. Cedar from Lebanon, stone dressed at the quarry so that no hammer was heard in the house, gold overlaid within, cherubim in the inner sanctuary, a veil, a porch with Jachin and Boaz, bronze sea and stands, an altar. Seven years in the building. At the dedication Solomon stood and spread his hands toward heaven. Forgive. Hear from heaven. When the foreigner comes. When they sin and are carried away and repent. Fire came down. Glory filled the house. The Lord warned: if you turn aside, this house will become a heap. Centuries later Nebuchadnezzar burned it.
Ezra’s people raised a second house, and the old men wept because it was not like the first. Haggai said the latter glory would be greater. Jesus walked in its courts, called it My Father’s house, and also said, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. He spoke of His body. The church is now a temple of the Spirit. The pattern was never the last address of God. It was the place He put His name, until the Word became flesh and tabernacled among us.
- David wanted to build. God assigned the builder and the peace to do it.
- No hammer in the house: the noise of preparation belonged outside.
- Glory filling the house is the point of the gold—not the gold.
- Heaven cannot contain Him. The house is gift and meeting, not a box for God.
- Dedication prayer already saw exile and return. The stones were never a charm.
- Burned by the head of gold. Rebuilt smaller. Fulfilled in a body and a people.
- Greater than the temple is here—His own word in those courts.
