Ancient of Days is Daniel’s name for the everlasting God on the throne of judgment.
As I looked, thrones were placed,
and the Ancient of Days took His seat.
His clothing was white as snow,
and the hair of His head like pure wool.
His throne was fiery flames;
its wheels were burning fire.
A stream of fire issued and came out from before Him.
A thousand thousands served Him.
The court sat in judgment,
and the books were opened.
One like a son of man came with the clouds of heaven and was presented before Him.
Daniel’s night visions move from beasts to a courtroom. The Ancient of Days sits. Age here is not frailty. It is before-all-kings, older than the empires that roar out of the sea. White clothing and wool-white hair are holiness and years no beast can claim. Fire is the element of His throne, as Ezekiel saw wheels and a storm of brightness. Books open. Dominion is taken from the horn that spoke great things. Then the son of man is brought near and given the kingdom that shall not pass away.
The title never becomes a proper name elsewhere in the Old Testament, but the picture fills the rest of Scripture. The Lord sits enthroned forever. His years have no end.
John sees one seated on the throne, and one like a son of man in the midst of the lampstands—hair white like white wool, eyes like a flame of fire. The Father gives the Son authority to execute judgment. The Ancient of Days is not a rival to Christ. He is the God who seats the Son and shares glory with the One who comes on the clouds. Every beast-kingdom is on a clock. He is not.
