The Centurion’s Servant is the man in Capernaum who was healed at a word the officer would not let Jesus walk to deliver.
Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, suffering terribly.
I am not worthy to have You come under my roof,
but only say the word,
and my servant will be healed.
For I too am a man under authority,
with soldiers under me.
I say to one, Go, and he goes.
Jesus marveled.
Truly, I tell you, with no one in Israel have I found such faith.
Go; let it be done for you as you have believed.
The servant was healed at that very moment.
A Gentile commander in the town Jesus called His own city understands chains of command better than many who had Moses from the cradle. Matthew has him come himself. Luke has elders of the Jews plead: he loves our nation, and he built us our synagogue. Either way the plea is for a servant—pais, a boy in the house, dear to him. Jesus starts toward the door. The centurion sends the better theology: I am not worthy. You need not enter. Your word travels like an order of the day. Authority, for him, is not swagger. It is a word that makes bodies move because a higher word already holds the speaker. Jesus marvels—almost nowhere else does the Gospel say that about faith. Many will come from east and west and recline with Abraham. The sons of the kingdom may be thrown out. Luke’s version ends, those who were sent returned to the house and found the servant well. Distance is not a limit on the Son of Man. Worthiness is not the ticket. A soldier’s grasp of command becomes a window onto who is walking to the house.
- Under authority is how he understands Jesus—not as a visiting healer only, but as a Commander.
- Not worthy to receive You under my roof keeps Gentile humility and Jewish scruple in one sentence.
- Only say the word is faith that does not need a show.
- Marveled is the Lord’s own astonishment at trust found outside Israel’s center.
- East and west at Abraham’s table is the sermon attached to a servant’s bed.
- He loves our nation and built the synagogue—mercy can live in an officer of Rome.
- The very moment matches the official’s son and the seventh hour: the word is the arrival.
- Capernaum – His own city; a Gentile at the door.
- The Servant – Paralyzed; in terrible distress; dear.
- Unworthy – Do not trouble Yourself; do not enter.
- Only the Word – Speak; it is enough.
- Chain of Command – I say Go; he goes.
- Marvelous Faith – Not found like this in Israel.
- That Moment – Healed; east and west promised a seat.
- Matthew 8:5-13 – “When he had entered Capernaum, a centurion came forward to him, appealing to him, ‘Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, suffering terribly.’ And he said to him, ‘I will come and heal him.’ But the centurion replied, ‘Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I too am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. And I say to one, “Go,” and he goes, and to another, “Come,” and he comes, and to my servant, “Do this,” and he does it.’ When Jesus heard this, he marveled and said to those who followed him, ‘Truly, I tell you, with no one in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come from east and west and recline at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness.’… And to the centurion Jesus said, ‘Go; let it be done for you as you have believed.’ And the servant was healed at that very moment.”
- Luke 7:2-10 – A centurion had a servant who was sick and at the point of death, who was highly valued by him… “He is worthy to have you do this for him, for he loves our nation, and he is the one who built us our synagogue.”… “I am not worthy to have you come under my roof.”… When those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the servant well.
- Matthew 8:8 – Only say the word, and my servant will be healed.
- Psalm 107:20 – He sent out His word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction.
- Isaiah 55:11 – So shall My word be that goes out from My mouth; it shall not return to Me empty.
- John 4:50-53 – “Go; your son will live.”… Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.
- Acts 10:1-2, 34-35 – Cornelius, a centurion… “Truly I understand that God shows no partiality.”
- Romans 1:16 – To the Jew first and also to the Greek.
- Matthew 15:28 – “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.”
- Hebrews 11:1 – Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

Do not make Jesus walk a mile to prove He can. Take the soldier’s lesson. You are not worthy. He is under no one’s roof as a guest who needs a chair. He commands. Ask for the word. Believe it travels. The servant lives when the Commander speaks.
