Household is the house and the people in it
—
the oikos God keeps using as a door.
As for me and my house,
we will serve the Lord.
Believe in the Lord Jesus,
and you will be saved,
you and your household.
The Lord opened Lydia’s heart…
she was baptized, and her household as well.
The gospel does not despise the kitchen,
the roof, or the names under it.
Abraham was told that in him all the families of the earth would be blessed. A household in Scripture is more than a couple and a child. It is kin, servants, sojourners, the circle that eats and sleeps under one rule. Noah’s house entered the ark. The lamb’s blood marked houses in Egypt. Rahab’s scarlet cord gathered a father’s house into safety. Joshua spoke for a house. Cornelius feared God with all his household. The jailer washed wounds at midnight and was baptized, he and all his, and rejoiced with his entire household. The paralytic was let down through a roof because a house had friends. Peter’s mother-in-law served in Simon’s house before the city packed the door. The church is the household of God, the pillar and buttress of the truth. Widows are to be cared for first in their own household. Hospitality opens the door to angels unawares and to apostles who need a table. Faith is personal. It is not private in a way that never touches the people who share the bread. Lydia prevailed: Come to my house and stay. A church address is often first an address.

A lamb for a household. Blood on the doorposts.

Do not treat the house as leftover after “real” ministry. Speak the word inside it. Serve the Lord there. Open the door. The church often begins at a table. The household of God is still looking for houses that will say Stay.
