Hope in the Bible
is not wishful thinking
or uncertain optimism.
It is a confident expectation
and assurance based on
the character and promises of God.
Biblical hope is certain because
it rests on the faithfulness of God.
¶ Biblical Understanding of Hope
In everyday language, hope often means “I hope it happens,” with no guarantee. In the Bible, hope is much stronger. It is the confident expectation that what God has promised will surely come to pass.
Christian hope is rooted in the finished work of Jesus Christ and looks forward to the fulfillment of all God’s promises — including the resurrection, eternal life, and the return of Christ. It is not based on our circumstances or feelings, but on the unchanging nature of God.
- Certain — Biblical hope is confident and sure, not doubtful.
- Future-Oriented — It looks forward to what God has promised.
- Grounded in God — It is based on God’s character, promises, and faithfulness.
- Strengthening — True hope gives strength, endurance, and joy even in difficult times.
- Produced by the Holy Spirit — The Spirit of God fills believers with hope.
- Romans 15:13 — Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
- Hebrews 6:19 — This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil.
- Romans 8:24-25 — For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance.
- 1 Peter 1:3 — Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
- Titus 2:13 — Looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.
- Psalm 42:5 — Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him for the help of His countenance.
Biblical hope has powerful effects on the life of a believer:
- It provides strength and endurance during trials and suffering.
- It gives joy and peace even when circumstances are difficult.
- It keeps us focused on eternity rather than being consumed by temporary troubles.
- It produces perseverance — we keep going because we know God’s promises are sure.
- It is an anchor for the soul — it keeps us steady when life is stormy.
- It motivates holy living — we live in light of the hope we have in Christ.
Christian hope is not based on positive thinking. It is based on the resurrection of Jesus and the promises of God’s Word. Because Jesus rose from the dead, we have a living hope that one day we too will rise and be with Him forever.
