The King Going to War is the saying of Jesus about a ruler who sits down first and counts.
What king,
going out to encounter another king in war,
will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?
If not, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace.
So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be My disciple.
Luke sets the king beside the man who starts a tower and cannot finish. Great crowds were following. Jesus turned and told them the cost before the march. Hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even your own life. Carry the cross. Then the two pictures: unfinished stonework that makes the neighborhood laugh, and a king who measures ten thousand against twenty thousand before he rides. The point is not that discipleship is a war you might politely decline. The point is that you do not begin as if it were cheap. The stronger king is already coming. Terms of peace, in that light, are surrender to the One whose force you cannot match. Renounce all that you have is the last line. Tower and campaign are one lesson. Count. Then go all the way, or do not pretend you have started. The gospel is free. The following is not a hobby. A king who will not sit down first loses more than a battle. He loses the name of a man who knew what he was doing.
- Sit down first is wisdom, not delay dressed as piety.

Count the cost. Do not lay a foundation you will not finish.
The stronger King is already coming. Peace with Him is surrender, not a treaty between equals.
Take up the cross. Follow. Sell all for the field that holds the treasure.
Sit down first. Then go all the way. Crowds can walk without counting. Disciples cannot.
