The Pearl of Great Price is the parable of a merchant who knew what he was looking for and then found more than the rest of his stock.
The kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls.
On finding one pearl of great value,
he went and sold all that he had and bought it.
Search, find, sell all, buy.
The kingdom is worth the whole inventory.
Matthew sets this saying next to the hidden treasure. Two men, one sale. The first stumbles on a chest in a field and hides it again for joy. The second is already in the trade. He deals in pearls. He can grade them. Then one pearl stops the shop. Great value is the Lord’s phrase. The merchant does not add this pearl to a tray of lesser ones. He liquidates the tray. All that he had becomes the price of one. The kingdom is not a bargain bin. It is not one more fine thing among fine things. It is the thing that ends comparison.
Some hear the gospel as an accident of mercy—treasure underfoot. Some have been seeking beauty, wisdom, righteousness, and then the Son stands in front of the search. Both sell everything. Neither keeps a second pearl for weekends.

- Joy in the field and decision in the market are one obedience.

Do not keep a second stock for comfort. The kingdom is not one more fine thing. It is the thing. Sell. Buy. Do not go home with the tray.
