The Persistent Widow is the parable Jesus told so that His disciples would always pray and not lose heart.
In a city there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected man.
A widow kept coming to him:
Give me justice against my adversary.
He refused for a while.
Then he said,
Though I neither fear God nor respect man,
yet because this widow keeps bothering me,
I will give her justice,
so that she will not beat me down by her coming.
Hear what the unrighteous judge says.
And will not God give justice to His elect, who cry to Him day and night?
He will give justice speedily.
Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes,
will He find faith on the earth?
Luke states the purpose before the story. This is not a riddle about court procedure. It is a command to keep praying when the answer is slow. The judge is the lesser case, as the friend at midnight was the lesser case. He is unrighteous. He does not fear God. He does not regard people. The widow has no husband, no bribe, no status—only a voice and a return trip. She does not stop. He yields to weariness, not to love.
Jesus turns the story: hear that judge. Then how much more God. The elect cry day and night. He is not unrighteous. He will give justice. Speedily sits beside the long wait of the parable on purpose. God’s timing is not the judge’s shrug, and it is not always the hour we marked on the wall. The last question is the sting. When the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth? Persistence is faith that stays on the doorstep. Losing heart is faith that decides the Judge is like the man in the city.
The widow teaches the church how to wait for a King who is not like that man.
