The Place of Honor is the saying Jesus spoke when He watched guests choose the best seats.
When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast,
do not sit down in a place of honor,
lest someone more distinguished than you be invited.
Then the host will say,
Give your place to this person,
and you will begin with shame to take the lowest place.
When you are invited,
go and sit in the lowest place,
so that when your host comes he may say,
Friend, move up higher.
For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled,
and he who humbles himself will be exalted.
Luke says He told a parable to those who were invited, when He noticed how they chose the places of honor. The room was already a contest. First couches, best view of the host, a rank you could wear with your robe. Jesus does not ban honor. He bans grabbing it. Take the low seat. Let the giver of the feast move you. If you seize the high place, the same host can send you down in front of the table. Shame is public because pride was public.
Proverbs had already said it is better to be told, Come up here, than to be put lower in the presence of a noble. The last line is the law of the kingdom: exalt yourself and be humbled; humble yourself and be exalted. He had just healed on the Sabbath in that house. He is about to tell of a banquet the first invited refused. Place at a table is never only furniture. It is a picture of how a person stands before the Host of heaven. The lowest place is not self-hatred. It is leaving the ranking to the One who said, Friend, move up higher.

Leave the seating chart to the Host. Take the low place. Clothe yourself with humility. At the proper time He will exalt you. The feast is His. So is the honor.
