Redeemer is one of the great titles of God and of Jesus Christ, describing the One who rescues His people from bondage by the payment of a price.
In the Old Testament the Lord is the Redeemer of Israel who delivered them from Egypt and from exile.
In the New Testament Jesus is the Redeemer who gave His life as a ransom for many and secured eternal redemption by His blood.
Redemption is at the heart of the gospel: sinners are set free from sin, death, and the devil because Christ paid the full price.
The concept of redemption runs through the whole of Scripture. In the ancient world a redeemer could buy back a relative from slavery, recover lost property, or avenge a wrong. God takes up this language and applies it to Himself. He redeemed Israel from Egypt with an outstretched arm and later promised to redeem them from exile. The book of Ruth beautifully illustrates the role of the kinsman-redeemer. Isaiah repeatedly calls the Lord “your Redeemer.” In the New Testament the same theme reaches its climax: Jesus Christ gave Himself as a ransom, purchased the church with His own blood, and secured eternal redemption. Believers are redeemed from the curse of the law, from empty ways of life, and from the power of darkness. The Redeemer has acted; the price has been paid; those who trust in Him are free and belong to God forever.

Redeemer is one of the most precious names of our God and Savior. The Lord who redeemed Israel from Egypt has, in the fullness of time, redeemed His people from sin and death through the blood of His Son. The price was not silver or gold but the precious blood of Christ. The result is full forgiveness, freedom from the curse, and belonging to God as His treasured possession. Job’s ancient confession still stands: “I know that my Redeemer lives.” The same Redeemer will one day stand upon the earth and complete the redemption of our bodies. Until that day, the redeemed live as those who have been bought with a price — free, forgiven, and zealous for good works, to the praise of His glory.
