The phrase “feet fitted with the gospel of peace”
comes from Ephesians 6:15
and refers to the footwear of the Roman soldier
as part of the Armor of God.
Spiritually, it represents
the believer’s readiness to move forward
with the message of peace
that comes through the gospel.
It also speaks of
stability and firm footing
in the midst of spiritual battle.
Roman soldiers wore sturdy sandals or boots with thick soles, often reinforced with nails or cleats. These shoes served several important purposes:
- They provided stability on uneven or slippery ground.
- They offered protection from sharp objects and rough terrain.
- They gave the soldier mobility to advance or hold position during battle.
- The nailed soles helped them stand firm without slipping when pushing against an enemy.
Without proper footwear, a soldier could not effectively fight or stand his ground.
Paul uses the image of the soldier’s footwear to represent the gospel of peace. There are two important aspects to this piece of armor:
- Readiness to share the gospel The gospel brings peace with God through Jesus Christ (Romans 5:1). Believers are called to be ready to share this message of reconciliation with others. Having our “feet fitted” means we are prepared to move and speak as ambassadors of peace.
- Stability through the gospel The gospel also gives us a firm foundation. Because we have peace with God, we can stand securely even when facing spiritual opposition. The good news anchors us and keeps us from being shaken.
In spiritual warfare, the enemy wants to destabilize us through fear, doubt, and conflict. The gospel of peace counters this by reminding us that:
- We are no longer enemies of God (Romans 5:10).
- We have peace with God through Christ.
- We are called to be peacemakers (Matthew 5:9).
- The message of the gospel is our message to a broken world.
When our feet are fitted with this gospel, we are both stable in our own faith and ready to advance the kingdom of God.
Putting on the gospel of peace involves both preparation and action:
- Regularly remind yourself of the peace you have with God through Jesus.
- Be ready and willing to share the gospel with others.
- Live as a peacemaker in your relationships.
- Stand firm on the truth of the gospel when under spiritual attack.
- Walk in the peace that the Holy Spirit produces (Galatians 5:22).
These “shoes” enable us to move forward with confidence and stability rather than fear or hesitation.
- Ephesians 6:15 (“and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace”)
- Romans 5:1 (“Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”)
- Isaiah 52:7 (“How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news…”)
- Ephesians 2:14-17 (Christ is our peace)
- 2 Corinthians 5:18-20 (we are ambassadors of reconciliation)
- Matthew 5:9 (“Blessed are the peacemakers…”)
The gospel of peace does two things at once: it gives us a firm place to stand, and it gives us a message to carry. When our feet are fitted with this gospel, we are both stable in the midst of spiritual battle and ready to move forward with the good news. This piece of armor reminds us that the message of peace is both our foundation and our mission.
