Jairus’s Daughter is the twelve-year-old girl Jesus raised after the delay on the road.
My little daughter is at the point of death.
Come and lay Your hands on her,
so that she may be made well and live.
Your daughter is dead.
Why trouble the Teacher any further?
Do not fear, only believe.
Talitha cumi
—
Little girl,
I say to you, arise.
Immediately the girl got up and began walking,
for she was twelve years of age.
He told them to give her something to eat.
A synagogue ruler’s house learned that death is not the last word once He has been asked to come.
Jairus falls at His feet in the open. Rank takes a knee. Twelve years of life in the child match twelve years of bleeding in the woman who interrupts the walk. Both are daughters before the day is over. While He speaks peace to the woman, messengers arrive. Dead. No need. He overhears and gives Jairus the only sentence that can carry a father the rest of the way: Do not fear, only believe. Peter, James, and John go in. Flute players and a commotion. The child is not dead but sleeping. They laugh. He puts them all outside. Mother, father, the three—and a word Mark keeps in her language. Little girl, get up. Walking. Twelve. Eat. Matthew says the report went through all that district. Luke says her spirit returned. The laughers are put out so that faith, not mockery, is in the room when life comes back. This is not the last raising. It is the one that teaches a ruler the hem-lesson in his own hallway: delay is not denial, and dead is not a wall to Him.
- Point of death is already faith’s hour. Dead is faith’s next exam.
- Twelve and twelve: two clocks, one mercy, one road.
- Do not fear, only believe is spoken over a death notice, not a maybe.
- Sleep is how He names what He is about to reverse.
- Talitha cumi is kept so the girl is a child, not a case.
- Give her something to eat is how resurrection reenters ordinary life.
- Laughter in the courtyard is not allowed at the bedside.
- The Ruler – Synagogue; at His feet; come lay hands.
- The Delay – A woman touching a hem; messengers; she is dead.
- Only Believe – Fear answered on the walk.
- Sleeping – They laugh; He puts them out.
- Talitha Cumi – Little girl, arise.
- Twelve – Walking; the matched years.
- Eat – Life hungry again; report spreading.
- Mark 5:22-24, 35-43 – “Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet and implored him earnestly, saying, ‘My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.’”… “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.”… “The child is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him… Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement. And he strictly charged them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.
- Luke 8:49-56 – “Do not fear; only believe, and she will be well.”… Her spirit returned, and she got up at once.
- Matthew 9:18-19, 23-26 – “My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.”… the report of this went through all that district.
- Mark 5:25-34 – A woman with a discharge of blood for twelve years… “Daughter, your faith has made you well.”
- John 11:11, 25 – “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep.”… “I am the resurrection and the life.”
- Luke 7:14-15 – “Young man, I say to you, arise.” And the dead man sat up.
- 1 Kings 17:21-22 – Elijah stretched himself upon the child… the life of the child came into him again.
- 2 Kings 4:32-35 – Elisha… the child sneezed seven times and opened his eyes.
- Isaiah 41:10 – Fear not, for I am with you.
- Hebrews 2:14-15 – That through death He might destroy the one who has the power of death.
My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay Your hands on her.
Your daughter is dead. Do not fear, only believe.
The child is not dead but sleeping. They laughed at Him.
Talitha cumi—Little girl, I say to you, arise. Immediately she got up and began walking. Give her something to eat.
Daughter, your faith has made you well. Twelve years. Two daughters.
I am the resurrection and the life.
Do not stop at the death notice. He overheard. Only believe. Let the mockers stay in the yard. Hear the word in her language. When she walks, feed her. Delay on the road was another daughter saved—not a father forgotten.
