Jairus is the synagogue ruler who fell at Jesus’ feet and asked Him to come before his child died.
Seeing Him, he fell at His feet and implored Him earnestly,
My little daughter is at the point of death.
Come and lay Your hands on her,
so that she may be made well and live.
Your daughter is dead.
Why trouble the Teacher any further?
Do not fear, only believe.
He went on with Him into the room where the laughers were not allowed.
A man of the bench learned to walk by a word when the bench had no help left.
He has a name and an office. Mark and Luke keep both. Rulers of synagogues could love the best seats; this one uses the floor. Capernaum—or the towns of that shore—had already heard authority in the assembly and seen a withered hand stretch out. Rank does not save a twelve-year-old. He comes while there is still a pulse in his request. Matthew shortens it to she has just died; come and she will live. Either way the knee is the point. Then the delay: a woman, a hem, a conversation. Messengers from his house do theology for him: dead, stop bothering. Jesus overhears and speaks to Jairus, not to the staff. Only believe. He lets three disciples in and the child’s mother. He has to keep walking when every professional in the courtyard says the case is closed. After Talitha cumi he is told to feed her and, in Mark, not to broadcast. We never hear a later speech from him. We hear a father who stayed in the room. That is the portrait. Office on the Sabbath; dust on his face on the road; silence while she eats.
- Earnestly is how a ruler prays when the title will not raise the dead.
- Little daughter is theology too. She is not a case number.
- The messengers mean well and preach despair. He must hear Jesus over them.
- Only believe is aimed at a man in motion, not a man with leisure.
- He is not the hero of the hem. He has to wait while another daughter is saved.
- Mother and father inside, crowd outside: faith is sometimes a smaller room.
- We do not need his memoirs. We need his knee and his continuing walk.
- Ruler of the Synagogue – Named; public; at His feet.
- The Ask – Come; lay hands; that she may live.
- The Wait – Interruption; twelve-year hemorrhage.
- The Notice – She is dead; do not trouble.
- The Word to Him – Do not fear; only believe.
- The Room – Peter, James, John; parents; no flute-laughers.
- The Table – She walks; give her food; he is still there.
- Mark 5:22-24 – “Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet and implored him earnestly, saying, ‘My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.’ And he went with him.”
- Mark 5:35-36, 40-43 – “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?”… “Do not fear, only believe.”… He took the child’s father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was… “Give her something to eat.”
- Luke 8:41-42, 49-50 – There came a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue. And falling at Jesus’ feet, he implored him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying… “Do not fear; only believe, and she will be well.”
- Matthew 9:18-19 – A ruler came in and knelt before Him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.”
- Mark 5:38-40 – He saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly… they laughed at Him.
- Luke 8:51 – He allowed no one to enter with Him except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child.
- Matthew 23:6 – They love the best seats in the synagogues—not this scene.
- John 4:47, 50 – An official asked Him to come down… “Go; your son will live.” The man believed the word.
- Mark 1:21-22 – He entered the synagogue and taught as one who had authority.
Jairus by name, a ruler of the synagogue, fell at His feet. My little daughter is at the point of death.
Come and lay Your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.
Your daughter is dead. Do not fear, only believe.
He took the child’s father and mother and went in where the child was.
Give her something to eat.
Do not let the office keep you off the road. Do not let the staff close the case. Walk when He says only believe. Wait through another person’s miracle. Go in when He shuts the laughers out. When she rises, feed her. That is what Jairus did with his name.
