The Demoniac in the Capernaum Synagogue is the man who cried out in the holy place on Jesus’ first Sabbath in His own city.
They went into Capernaum,
and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and was teaching.
They were astonished at His teaching,
for He taught them as one who had authority,
and not as the scribes.
What have You to do with us,
Jesus of Nazareth?
Have You come to destroy us?
I know who You are
—
the Holy One of God.
Be silent, and come out of him!
The unclean spirit convulsed him and came out with a loud cry.
What is this?
A new teaching with authority!
He commands even the unclean spirits,
and they obey Him.
Mark’s first day in Capernaum is synagogue, then house, then sundown crowds. Before a fever is rebuked, a spirit is. The man is in the assembly. No one had put him out. Teaching with authority is already shaking the room when the scream names Nazareth and the Holy One. Knowledge without surrender—the same pattern as Legion on the far shore. Jesus will not accept advertising from an unclean throat. Be silent. Come out. The convulsion is public. So is the exit. Awe runs the district. Luke says the spirit threw him down without injuring him. Authority is the word they keep using: He teaches it, then He proves it on a tenant they had learned to sit beside. Holy One of God is true speech. It is not allowed to set the agenda. Capernaum will see many works and still hear a woe. This first sign in the synagogue is the kingdom arriving where Moses is read—and where something else had been listening.
He taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.
What have You to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? I know who You are—the Holy One of God.
Be silent, and come out of him! The unclean spirit came out with a loud cry.
A new teaching with authority. He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.
Even the demons believe—and shudder.
Do not confuse a true title with a clean heart. The Holy One will not rent an unclean mouth. He teaches. He commands. The pew is not safety if the spirit stays. Hear the authority. Let what does not belong come out. Fame is not the same as repentance.
