The Official’s Son at Capernaum is the second sign John records,
a fever broken at a word from Cana.
There was an official whose son was ill.
When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee,
he went to Him and asked Him to come down and heal his son,
for he was at the point of death.
Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe.
Sir, come down before my child dies.
Go; your son will live.
The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way.
Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.
This was now the second sign that Jesus did when He had come from Judea to Galilee.
Not the centurion’s servant.
A royal official.
Same town of the sick.
Same kind of faith: the word is enough.
Cana again—where water became wine. An officer of the king’s service comes up from Capernaum because a boy is dying. He wants Jesus on the road, in the house, hands on the child. Jesus names a Galilee hungrier for spectacles than for a sentence. The father will not debate method. Come down before he dies. Go; your son will live. Belief starts as taking that sentence and turning toward home without the Healer in the party. Servants meet him with the news. He asks the hour. The seventh. Same hour. He himself believed, and all his household. John calls it a sign, not a coincidence of timing. The first sign manifested glory at a wedding. The second manifests authority over death’s porch from another town. Capernaum will later be called His own city and still hear a woe. This house, at least, believed the word. Fever has an hour. The word has a farther reach than feet.
- Second sign keeps Cana in the map so the wedding is not a one-night wonder.
- Come down is natural love. Go is commanded trust.
- He believed the word—then walked. The household believed after the hour matched.
- Signs and wonders can be craved as theater. This father is driven by a dying boy.
- Seventh hour is John’s way of saying the speech and the break were one act.
- Distinguish this official from Matthew’s centurion. Two houses. Two stories. One town’s need.
- Woe later over Capernaum does not cancel a household that heard Go.
- From Cana – Jesus back in the sign-town; the boy in Capernaum.
- Point of Death – Come down; do not delay.
- Signs and Wonders – The warning over a seeing people.
- Go; He Lives – The sentence taken on the road.
- The Seventh Hour – Fever left; question asked; match found.
- Household – He believed, and all his house.
- Second Sign – Glory again in Galilee.
- John 4:46-54 – “So he came again to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine. And at Capernaum there was an official whose son was ill. When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. So Jesus said to him, ‘Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe.’ The official said to him, ‘Sir, come down before my child dies.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Go; your son will live.’ The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way. As he was going down, his servants met him and told him that his son was recovering. So he asked them the hour when he began to get better, and they said to him, ‘Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.’ The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him, ‘Your son will live.’ And he himself believed, and all his household. This was now the second sign that Jesus did when he had come from Judea to Galilee.”
- John 2:11 – This, the first of His signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested His glory.
- Psalm 107:20 – He sent out His word and healed them.
- Matthew 8:8, 13 – Only say the word… the servant was healed at that very moment.
- John 4:50 – The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him.
- Acts 16:31-34 – Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.
- Matthew 11:23 – And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will be brought down to Hades.
- Hebrews 11:1 – Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
- John 20:29 – Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.
Sir, come down before my child dies.
Go; your son will live. The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way.
Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him. That was the hour when Jesus had said, Your son will live.
He himself believed, and all his household. This was now the second sign.
He sent out His word and healed them.
Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe—yet a father believed a sentence on the road.
Do not confuse this house with the centurion’s. Do confuse both with the same lesson: His word travels. Take it home. Ask the hour. Let the household believe. The child lives when He says so.
