The Book of Revelation (also called the Apocalypse) is the final book of the Bible. Its full title is “The Revelation of Jesus Christ.” It is a book of prophecy that reveals the person of Jesus Christ and the events that will take place in the future.
Revelation is unique among the books of the Bible. It is the only book that promises a special blessing to those who read it, hear it, and keep what is written in it (Revelation 1:3). While it contains many symbols and visions, its central message is clear: Jesus Christ is coming again to judge the world and establish His eternal Kingdom.
The book was written by the Apostle John while he was exiled on the island of Patmos, most likely around A.D. 95 during the reign of the Roman Emperor Domitian.
¶ Purpose and Theme
The primary purpose of Revelation is to reveal Jesus Christ — who He is, what He has done, and what He will do in the future. The book shows Christ as the glorified King, the Judge, the Bridegroom, and the returning Conqueror.
Key themes include:
- The sovereignty and glory of God
- The return of Jesus Christ
- The Tribulation and God’s judgment on evil
- The defeat of Satan and his followers
- The establishment of Christ’s Kingdom
- The New Heaven, New Earth, and New Jerusalem
- The final state of the saved and the lost
Revelation is often understood in three main sections, based on Revelation 1:19:
- “The things which you have seen” (Chapter 1) — The vision of the glorified Christ.
- “The things which are” (Chapters 2–3) — The letters to the seven churches, representing the Church Age.
- “The things which will take place after this” (Chapters 4–22) — Future events, including the Tribulation, the Second Coming, the Millennium, and the Eternal State.
- Revelation 1:1 — The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants—things which must shortly take place. And He sent and signified it by His angel to His servant John.
- Revelation 1:3 — Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it; for the time is near.
- Revelation 1:19 — Write the things which you have seen, and the things which are, and the things which will take place after this.
- Revelation 19:11-16 — Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True… And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.

The Book of Revelation has great value for believers today:
- It gives us hope — We know how the story ends. Christ wins.
- It motivates holy living — Knowing that Jesus is coming soon should affect how we live now.
- It provides perspective — It helps us see current events in light of God’s bigger plan.
- It encourages worship — The book is filled with scenes of heavenly worship that inspire us to worship God here and now.
- It warns of judgment — It shows the seriousness of rejecting Christ and the certainty of God’s justice.
- It promises blessing — Simply reading and heeding its message brings a special blessing from God.
Revelation is not meant to confuse us, but to reveal Jesus Christ and prepare us for His return. It is the climax of God’s written revelation to mankind.
